Lopez Walk-Off Gives Gerber First Win

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

LYNDHURST, N.J. – Senior shortstop Aimee Lopez (Riverbank, Calif./Riverbank) came up with a two-out, walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift Felician College to a 9-8 Game 2 victory and a split of its Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference softball doubleheader with visiting Bloomfield College on Tuesday afternoon at Matera Field. Bloomfield was triumphant in the day's first game, 6-4, in nine innings.

Felician (4-11, 1-3 CACC) was playing its 2015 home openers. Lopez's hit gave Golden Falcon freshman pitcher Kaila Gerber (Vincentown, N.J./Seneca) her first collegiate victory. Gerber (1-1) allowed two runs on three hits in 1 1/3 innings of relief work.

Bloomfield pitcher/designated player Kirsten Wilson (Beaver Falls, Pa./Riverside) went 3 for 8 with seven runs batted in on the day, and earned a complete game pitching victory in Game 1.

Tuesday's second game was played almost entirely through steady, sometimes heavy, rain. The teams combined for 11 walks, two hit batters, and five wild pitches. Felician scored its nine runs on only six hits.

The Golden Falcons led, 8-6, after six innings. Bear sophomore Aubrey Orr (Gallup, N.M./Miyamura) worked Gerber for a two-out, bases loaded walk in the top of the seventh, and Wilson did the same to tie the score. But in the home half of the seventh, Taylor Parker (Surrey, British Columbia/Semiahmoo) drew a leadoff walk and was sacrificed to second base by Mercedes Montanez (Vista, Calif./Rancho Buena Vista). Parker advanced to third on a groundout, and scored the game-winner when Lopez grounded a ball up the middle on a 1-and-2 count.

The contest lasted two hours, 23 minutes. Lopez was 2 for 3 with three RBI, and freshman Jeannette Roldan (Hesperia, Calif./Oak Hills) had a three-run triple in Felician's six-run second inning. Lauren Bueno (Hacienda Heights, Calif./La Serna) was 3 for 4 with a double and a home run in Bloomfield's 14-hit attack, scoring four times.

Game 1 was decided by the international tiebreaker, which went into effect in for the ninth inning with the teams tied, 2-2. Melissa Yepez (Paramount, Calif./Paramount) produced an RBI single to put the Bears (14-8, 6-2) ahead for good. Yepez was sacrificed to second, and a single and a Felician error loaded the bases. Golden Falcon pitcher Ashley Owens (Lockport, N.Y./Starpoint) (3-5) induced a force at home for the second out, but Wilson followed with a three-run double.

Wilson's hit became important when Ciera Clark (Granite Bay, Calif./Del Oro) reached her for a two-run homerun to start the bottom of the ninth. But Wilson (9-2) recorded a strikeout and two groundouts to complete a five-hitter. She struck out seven batters and walked five.

Owens also pitched a complete game, giving up two earned runs on 10 hits with three strikeouts. Jackie Duenas (Riverside, Calif./Arlington) had a based-loaded walk and Roldan a sacrifice fly in the fourth, but Felician left 12 runners on base in the game.

Bloomfield forced extra innings when Bueno tripled and scored on an Orr single in the fifth.
