Owens Pitches First Career Shutout

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

CLERMONT, Fla. – Freshman Ashley Owens (Lockport, N.Y.) pitched her first collegiate shutout and senior Ciera Clark (Granite Bay, Calif.) went 3 for 3 with a double and four runs batted in as Felician College defeated Southern Wesleyan University, 9-0, in five innings in non-conference softball action during the Dot Richardson Spring Games on Wednesday morning at the National Training Center.

Earlier on Wednesday, Felician (3-6) lost to Saginaw Valley State University, 12-0, also in five innings.

Against Southern Wesleyan, the Golden Falcons jumped ahead early to snap a five-game losing streak. With two out in the bottom of the first inning, Amanda Lopez (Riverbank, Calif.) and Clark drove consecutive doubles. Clark then came around to score when a fly ball by Mercedes Montanez (Vista, Calif.) was dropped.

Felician broke things open with five second-inning runs. With two runners on base and one out, Natalie Quintanilla (Hasbrouck Heights, N.J.) delivered an RBI single. The Golden Falcons later received a run-scoring fielder's choice from Lopez and an infield RBI single from Clark. Lopez scored on an error on the latter play, and Taylor Parker (Surrey, British Columbia) capped the uprising with a ground-out to second. Clark grounded a two-run single through the middle in the fourth frame to conclude the scoring.

Owens (3-2) scattered six hits in a five-inning effort, striking out four batters and walking none. She recorded a strikeout to escape a second-and-third, two-out jam in the third inning. The Warriors (7-7) stranded six runners overall.

Lopez was 2 for 3 with a double and scored three runs, and Montanez also had a double among two hits. Sophomore center fielder Sara Sweatt (Myrtle Beach, S.C.) went 2 for 3 for SWU.

In its first game of the day, Felician was the victim of a one-hit shutout by Saginaw Valley freshman righty Anna Conrad (Green Bay, Wis.). Conrad faced three batters over the minimum, striking out one while walking two.

Ahead, 3-0, after three innings, the Cardinals (7-4) put the game away with nine runs on five hits in the bottom of the fourth. Mackenzie Rousse (Bay City, Mich.) had a three-run triple in the inning, Nicole Romain (Macomb, Mich.) a two-run single, and Amanda Best (Parker, Colo.) a two-run triple.

SVSU leadoff hitter Madison Burgess (Commerce, Mich.) went 3 for 4 with two runs scored and teammates Best and Jessica Wood (Grandeville, Mich.) garnered two hits each. Senior shortstop Aimee Lopez (Riverbank, Calif.) had the lone safety for the Golden Falcons, a leadoff single in the third.
