Softball Is Unable To Slow Streaking Caldwell

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

LYNDHURST, N.J. – Caldwell University scored in five of its seven offensive innings, including a six-spot in the top of the third, to earn a 10-6 Game 2 victory and a sweep of its Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference softball doubleheader over host Felician College on Monday afternoon at Matera Field. The Cougars nipped Felician, 2-1, in Game 1.

Caldwell (17-9, 11-1 CACC), the first place team in the CACC, has won 11 consecutive games. Felician senior catcher Mercedes Montanez (Vista, Calif./Rancho Buena Vista) went 4 for 7 on the day and had a triple in each game.

Felician (9-16, 6-8) took a 2-1 lead in the first inning of the nightcap when Taylor Parker (Surrey, British Columbia) stroked an RBI double and scored on a Montanez triple. The Cougars, however, took the lead for good by tallying six unearned runs in the third, needing only three hits.

Golden Falcon freshman pitcher Kaila Gerber (Vincentown, N.J./Seneca) (3-3) appeared poised to escape a first-and-third, one-out jam unscathed when she induced a grounder to third followed by a fly ball. But the latter was misplayed in the outfield, allowing two runs to score. Following a walk, Kiahna Silva (Etiwanda, Calif./Etiwanda) delivered an RBI single, and another walk loaded the bases. Gerber again induced an outfield pop-up, but it, too, was mishandled, and three runs scored.

In the fourth, Felician received a solo home run from Aimee Lopez (Riverbank, Calif./Riverbank) and a two-run single by Ciera Clark (Granite Bay, Calif./Del Oro) to pull to within 7-5. But Caldwell pulled away with single runs in each of the last three innings. Cougar reliever Sarah Almasy (Stratford, N.J./Sterling) escaped a bases-loaded jam in the sixth, then worked around a two-out single to retire the side in the seventh and earn her second save of the season.

Montanez went 3 for 4 with two RBI and Clark was among three players with two hits each for the Golden Falcons, who out-hit Caldwell, 11-9. Senior catcher Alyssa Calderon (Fontana, Calif./Etiwanda) was 2 for 2 with three RBI for the Cougars.

Game 1 matched Caldwell junior right-hander Amber Padilla (Chino, Calif./Pomona Catholic) and Felician freshman righty Ashley Owens (Lockport, N.Y./Starpoint). The Cougars bunched together five hits in the top of the fourth inning, receiving an RBI single from Amy Hickman (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Liberty) and a sacrifice fly by Lauren Frye (Jupiter, Fla./Jupiter), to score both of its runs.

Padilla (10-3) went the distance on a four-hitter, recording four strikeouts and two walks. The only blemish on her line came in the sixth, when Parker doubled and came home on a two-out single by Jackie Duenas (Riverside, Calif./Arlington). Duenas finished 2 for 2 plus a walk.

Owens (6-7) also tossed a complete-game, allowing eight hits with six strikeouts and two walks. Hickman was 2 for 2 for Caldwell.

Felician steps out of conference action to host New York Institute of Technology on Wednesday.
