Gerber, Golden Falcons Top USciences Twice

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

PHILADELPHIA – Felician College freshman pitcher Kaila Gerber (Vincentown, N.J.) earned the win in both ends of a doubleheader as the Golden Falcons swept the University of the Sciences, 6-4 and 6-3, in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference softball action Saturday afternoon at McNeil Field. Gerber tossed four innings of relief in Felician's 10-inning victory in Game 1, then followed with a complete-game triumph in the nightcap.

With the victories, combined with other conference results, Felician (14-17, 10-8 CACC) moved into sixth place in the 14-school CACC. The top eight teams at season's end will qualify for the league playoffs. The Golden Falcons have eight CACC games remaining.

Felician senior shortstop Aimee Lopez (Riverbank, Calif.) and classmate Mercedes Montanez (Vista, Calif.) had two hits in each game on Saturday. Junior third-baseman Jackie Keifer (Aldan, Pa.) did the same for USciences (7-23, 5-11).

In Game 1, Golden Falcon freshman right-hander Ashley Owens (Lockport, N.Y.) carried a four-hit shutout and a 2-0 lead into the bottom of the sixth inning. The Devils, however, rallied to tie the game in that inning. The score remained 2-2 until the ninth, when the international tiebreaker went into effect. Lopez produced an RBI single in the top half of the ninth, but Barbie Barron (Sicklerville, N.J.) answered with a run-scoring double in the home portion. The Devils proceeded to load the bases, but Gerber, who had entered to start the seventh, induced a fielder's choice grounder to extend the game.

Felician senior Ciera Clark (Granite Bay, Calif.) led off the 10th with an RBI double. With two outs, Clark scored on a fielding error. The Golden Falcons picked up a third run when all runners were safe on Jeannette Roldan's (Hesperia, Calif.) fielder's choice grounder. The extra runs proved critical when Keifer delivered a one-out RBI double in the bottom of the 10th. Gerber then retired the side on a groundout and strikeout for the victory.

Gerber (5-3) started Game 2 and gave up two earned runs on nine hits in going the distance. Felician came back from deficits of 2-0 and 3-2 to pick up the win. Clark hit a game-tying two-run home run in the top of the fifth, but the Devils went back ahead on an RBI single by Maria Serrantino (Staten Island, N.Y.).

Montanez and sophomore Jackie Dueñas (Riverside, Calif.) each singled to start the sixth. Felician tied the game when pinch-runner Roldan came around to score on an errant pickoff throw, and went ahead one out later on an RBI groundout by Amanda Lopez (Riverbank, Calif.). A run-scoring single by Natalie Quintanilla (Hasbrouck Heights, N.J.) capped the Golden Falcon rally.

Gerber escaped a bases-loaded jam in the sixth before Felician added an insurance run in the seventh on an RBI single by Amanda Lopez. Gerber worked around a one-out double to pitch a scoreless seventh.

Freshman Alicia DeFlaviis (Cherry Hill, N.J.) went 2 for 3 and scored twice for Felician. The Devils' Jenna Hohenberger (Clementon, N.J.) was 3 for 3.

The Golden Falcons play another CACC doubleheader on Sunday when they host Philadelphia University in a 1 p.m make-up.
