Box Score 2 NEWTOWN, Pa. – The Felician College softball team scored four runs in the top of the seventh inning, the final three with two outs, and held on for a 4-3 Game 2 victory and a split of its Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader with host Holy Family University on Saturday afternoon at Helen Randle Park. Holy Family earned a walk-off 2-1 win in the day's opening game.
With its triumph in the nightcap, Felician (18-19, 14-10 CACC) secured a berth in next week's CACC Championship tournament. The Golden Falcons will be making their first playoff appearance since finishing fourth in the event in 2012. This year's tournament begins on Thursday, April 30, in Lakewood, N.J., with Felician's seed and first-round opponent to be determined by Sunday's league games.
Despite drawing six walks in the first six innings of Game 2, the Golden Falcons were held without a hit entering the seventh and trailed, 3-0. Felician junior Amanda Lopez (Riverbank, Calif.) ended the no-hit bid by HFU senior Sarah Chilutti (Philadelphia, Pa.) by leading off the fateful seventh with a double down the left field line.
With one out, Zharde Sellona (Aliso Viejo, Calif.) reached on an error and Aimee Lopez (Riverbank, Calif.) walked to load the bases. Natalie Quintanilla (Hasbrouck Heights, N.J.) drove in a run with a groundout, and Ciera Clark (Granite Bay, Calif.), the CACC's home run and run-batted-in leader, was walked for the third time in the game.
With the Golden Falcons down to their final out, senior third baseman Taylor Parker (Surrey, British Columbia) lined a double down the left field line, plating Sellona and Aimee Lopez to tie the game. Senior designated player Mercedes Montanez (Vista, Calif.) then legged out an infield single to bring home pinch-runner Alicia DeFlaviis (Cherry Hill, N.J.) and give the visitors the lead.
Felician senior left-hander Chelsea DeGuzman (Clermont, Fla.) (4-4) worked around a one-out single to retire the side in the seventh and allow her team to gain the split. DeGuzman scattered eight hits and allowed two earned runs in a complete-game effort. Jennifer Trapp (Castle Rock, Colo.), Kristine Casey (Newark, Del.) and Brianna Scotto (West Babylon, N.Y.) had two hits each for the Tigers (16-13, 15-11).
An RBI single by HFU sophomore Bailey Walters (Ridgecrest, Calif.) in the bottom of the first inning gave the hosts an early 1-0 lead in Game 1. Walters, also the Tigers' starting pitcher, and Felician freshman right-hander Ashley Owens (Lockport, N.Y.) then matched each other zero for zero until the fifth, when the Golden Falcons drew even. Montanez led off with a double and came home on a single by Jackie Dueñas (Riverside, Calif.). Duenas advanced to second base on the throw home, but was left stranded.
Owens nearly worked out of a first-and-third, none-out jam in the seventh inning before the Tigers put across the winning run. After an outfield fly and an infield popup, Owens issued a walk to load the bases. Jenna Vazquez (Newark, Del.) followed with a ground ball. Felician first baseman Clark stretched to handle a wide throw, but was ruled to have come off the base, and HFU claimed the tight victory.
Walters (7-6) went the distance on a four-hitter, striking out seven batters while walking none. Owens yielded five hits in a tough-luck loss. Trapp was 2 for 3 with a double for the Tigers.
Felician completes the regular season by traveling to second-place Dominican (N.Y.) College for a noon CACC twinbill on Sunday.
