Felician Exits CACC Softball Tournament

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

LAKEWOOD, N.J. – The Felician College softball team saw its 2015 season come to an end during Day 1 of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Championship Tournament on Thursday afternoon on the campus of Georgian Court University.

Felician (18-23), the event's No. 6 seed, lost to No. 3 seed and defending champion Wilmington (Del.) University, 4-0, in its opening game of the playoffs. Later on Thursday, the Golden Falcons fell to No. 7 seed Bloomfield College in an elimination game, also by a 4-0 score.

Felician was blanked by two members of the All-CACC first team. Wilmington senior Chelsea Botsch (Smyrna, Del./Smyrna) tossed a no-hitter at the Golden Falcons, and Bloomfield sophomore Kirsten Wilson (Beaver Falls, Pa./Riverside) came up with a four-hit shutout. With a sixth-inning single off of Wilson, senior third-baseman Taylor Parker (Surrey, British Columbia/Semiahmoo) became Felician's all-time hits leader. She will graduate with 180.

Wilmington wasted little time in capturing the lead in the first-round contest, plating two runs in the bottom of the first inning against Felician freshman right-hander Ashley Owens (Lockport, N.Y./Starpoint) (8-12). The Wildcats had three hits in the frame, including RBI singles by Cambria Ziemba (Wilmington, Del./St. Mark's) and Ashley Bennette (Laurel, Del./Delmar).

Wilmington (32-14) tacked on a pair in the third. With runners on first and third and one out, Miranda Pedersen (El Segundo, Calif./El Segundo) and Danielle Bradley (Delmar, Del./Delmar) executed a double steal, with Bradley scoring on the back end. One out later, Michelle Panasiti (Sicklerville, N.J./Washington Township) delivered an RBI single for the final margin.

Owens and reliever Chelsea DeGuzman (Clermont, Fla./South Lake) kept the Wildcats off of the scoreboard the rest of the way, but Felician was having little success against Botsch (18-5). The right-hander needed 105 pitches to complete her gem, striking out six Golden Falcons. She completed the no-hitter by inducing three harmless fly balls in the top of the seventh.

Felician senior first-baseman Ciera Clark (Granite Bay, Calif./Del Oro) walked twice and was hit by a pitch. The only other baserunner for the Golden Falcons came when freshman Jeannette Roldan (Hesperia, Calif./Hesperia) reached on a throwing error to start the fifth. Roldan stole second base, but three groundouts ended any hope for a threat. Kelsey Doherty (Harbeson, Del./Sussex Tech) was 3 for 4 and Ziemba 2 for 4 in Wilmington's nine-hit attack.

The Golden Falcons got off to a slow start again in their elimination game. Bloomfield (24-20-1) used a hit batsman and three consecutive one-out hits in the first inning to plate three runs and knock out Felician pitcher Kaila Gerber (Vincentown, N.J./Seneca) (6-5). Bear senior Angela Hauser (Morganville, N.J./Brick Township) had the big blow with a two-run single.

Owens entered in relief and pitched 5 2/3 shutout innings to keep Felician within striking distance. But the Golden Falcon offense was once again stymied. Felician put two runners on base in the bottom of the sixth, but Mercedes Montanez's (Vista, Calif./Rancho Buena Vista) long fly ball was caught at the warning track in right field. After the Bears scored an insurance run in the seventh, the Golden Falcons again put two runners on, but Wilson (12-8) ended the game with her fifth strikeout.

Junior Amanda Lopez (Riverbank, Calif./Riverbank) was 2 for 3 for Felician, and Roldan had a double to start the seventh. Bloomfield's Hauser finished 3 for 3 with two RBI.
