Softball Takes Down First-Place GCU

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

LYNDHURST, N.J. – Felician College senior Natalie Quintanilla (Hasbrouck Heights, N.J./Immaculate Conception) jump-started a five-run sixth-inning with a tiebreaking two-run single to help the Golden Falcons earn an 8-3 Game 2 victory over visiting Georgian Court University and a sweep of the teams' Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference softball doubleheader on Monday afternoon at Matera Field. Felician captured Game 1, 10-2, in five innings.

Georgian Court (10-20, 9-3 CACC) entered the day as the CACC's first-place team. Felician senior Mercedes Montanez (Vista, Calif./Rancho Buena Vista) and freshman Jeannette Roldan (Hesperia, Calif./Oak Hills) each went 5 for 8 in the twinbill. With a single in Game 2, senior first-baseman Ciera Clark (Granite Bay, Cailf./Del Oro) tied the Felician career hits record of 167 held by Heather Van Dyke.

In the nightcap, Felician (8-11, 5-3) held a 3-1 lead after three innings. That score remained until the top of the sixth inning, when GCU rallied to tie the game. The Lions put runners on first and second bases with one out, and both advanced on a groundout. Senior Alyssa Paradiso (Atco, N.J./Hammonton) then looped a single to short left field to score both runners.

The Golden Falcons put their first two runners on base in the bottom of the sixth. Following a sacrifice, Quintanilla put Felician ahead to stay with a single to right. The hosts would go on to load the bases with two outs. Taylor Parker (Surrey, British Columbia/Semiahmoo) delivered an infield RBI single, and a Montanez hit brought home two more runs for the final margin.

Felician freshman pitcher Kaila Gerber (Vincentown, N.J./Seneca) (3-1) worked around a leadoff double and a two-out walk to retire the side in the seventh and earn a complete-game victory. Gerber scattered eight hits, struck out two batters, and walked five. The Lions left 11 runners on base.

Montanez went 3 for 4 with four RBI, and Roldan and Parker were each 2 for 4 for the Golden Falcons, who amassed a 12-8 advantage in hits. Paradiso was 4 for 4 for the Lions and drove in all three of her team's runs.

Felician got its day off to a fast start when it scored six runs on six hits in the first inning of Game 1. Jackie Duenas (Riverside, Calif./Arlington) and Aimee Lopez (Riverbank, Calif./Riverbank) had two-run singles in the frame. The Golden Falcons led, 6-2, after three innings before Roldan came up with a two-run single in the bottom of the fourth. The hosts then ended the game in the fifth on the NCAA eight-run rule on RBI hits from Montanez and Amanda Lopez (Riverbank, Calif./Riverbank).

Felician freshman right-hander Ashley Owens (Lockport, N.Y./Starpoint) (5-5) allowed four hits in a five-inning complete game. She recorded three strikeouts and one walk. Roldan went 3 for 4, and Montanez and Amanda Lopez accumulated two hits each.

Dara Schroeder (Bordentown, N.J./Northern Burlington) led off the game with an inside-the-park homerun. Schroeder was 2 for 3 and JoLei Buonanno (Fishkill, N.Y./John Jay) had an RBI triple for the Lions.

Weather permitting, Felician will host Wilmington (Del.) University in a CACC doubleheader on Tuesday.
