Box Score 2 MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Felician University suffered a pair of losses on the second day of its three-day trip to the Snowbird Softball Freeze-Out Tournament on Saturday afternoon at Grand Park. Felician's day began with a 3-2 setback to Lock Haven University. The Golden Falcons were then defeated by nationally-ranked Calfornia (Pa.) University, 9-3.
Junior second-baseman Jackie Duenas (Riverside, Calif.) was 3 for 6 on the day for Felician (2-2).
In their first game, the Golden Falcons out-hit Lock Haven, 8-7, but left 10 runners on base. Felician, the designated visiting team, plated a run in the top of the first inning on an RBI single by freshman Racquel Manzo (Whittier, Calif.). The Golden Falcons maintained the 1-0 lead through four innings, backed by the pitching of sophomore Ashley Owens (Lockport, N.Y.).
Felician extended its lead in the fifth frame when Duenas led off with a triple and scored two batters later on a hit by Amanda Lopez (Riverbank, Calif.). But the Bald Eagles erupted for three runs and the lead in the bottom of the fifth. With one out and runners on first and second, freshman Jessica Strouse (Beech Creek, Pa.) blasted a triple to right-center to tie the score. Strouse then scored the eventual winning run on a wild pitch.
Winning pitcher Bekah Slattery (Douglasville, Pa.) worked out of trouble in the sixth before handing the ball to junior Rachel Mouillesseaux (Endicott, N.Y.) for the seventh. Mouillesseaux issued a pair of two-out walks, then induced a groundout to earn the save.
Strouse and Michelle Holweger (Lansdale, N.Y.) were each 2 for 3 for the Bald Eagles (2-2). Zeaenna Brackett (Woodbury, N.J.) and Lopez went 2 for 3 and Duenas had two hits and scored twice for Felician. Owens gave up seven hits and struck out three batters in a complete-game effort.
California (3-1) is ranked No. 4 in the national NCAA Division II preseason coaches' poll. The Vulcans pounded out 14 hits in the game, including nine en route to taking a 7-2 lead after two innings. Felician, again the visiting team, went ahead on a two-run home run by Manzo, the first of her college career, in the top of the first, but California came back with four runs in the bottom of the first and three more in the second.
Senior pitcher Alex Sagl (Oakville, Ontario) went the distance on a five-hitter, striking out eight Golden Falcons while walking one. Natalya Smarra (McKees Rocks, Pa.) homered and drove in three runs for the Vulcans, while teammates Kaity Finley (Latrobe, Pa.) and Haily Wilson (Delaware, Ohio) had three hits each.
Duenas and Brynne Bauman (Hazlet, N.J.) each doubled for Felician. Sophomore pitcher Kaila Gerber (Vincentown, N.J.) tossed 4 1/3 innings of relief, allowing one earned run on five hits.
