Softball Offense Breaks Out For 19 Hits

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Felician University ended its six-game trip to the Snowbird Softball Freeze-Out Tournament by pounding out 19 base hits in a 9-4 non-conference victory over Winston-Salem State University on Sunday afternoon at Grand Park.

Earlier on Sunday, Felician (3-3) was defeated by Merrimack College, 8-7. Golden Falcon freshman shortstop Zeaenna Brackett (Woodbury, N.J.) was a combined 5 for 8 with four runs batted in and three stolen bases in the two games.

Felician's 19 hits against WSSU were the third-most in the 20-year history of its program, and two shy of the school record. Brackett was 4 for 5, and Jackie Dueñas (Riverside, Calif.), Jeannette Roldan (Hesperia, Calif.) and Alicia DeFlaviis (Cherry Hill, N.J.) garnered three hits each for the Golden Falcons.

Felician, the designated visiting team, led, 5-4, after three innings, then broke the game open with a three-run fourth. Freshman Raquel Manzo (Whittier, Calif.) had an RBI single, and Roldan capped the rally with a two-out, two-run triple. Duenas completed the game's scoring with a run-scoring single in the fifth.

Golden Falcon sophomore pitcher Kaila Gerber (Vincentown, N.J.) (1-0) hurled a complete game in her first start of the season. She allowed six hits, and struck out two batters while walking two. For the Rams, losing pitcher Katherine Zimmer (Kernersville, N.C.) hit a three-run inside-the-park home run in the first inning, and junior third baseman Mercedes Hargett (Havelock, N.C.) added a solo shot in the third.

Felician's first game on Sunday was a back-and-forth affair with Merrimack that lasted two hours, 19 minutes. The Warriors used four pitchers, with junior Haley Currie (Burlington, Mass.) tossing the last 2 1/3 scoreless frames to pick up the victory. The Golden Falcons erased three deficits before succumbing, tying the game at 5-5 with two runs in the third, and at 7-7 with a pair in the fifth.

Merrimack was the designated visiting team, and Warrior junior Samantha Waskowitz reached on an error to start the top of the sixth. She was sacrificed to second base, and scored on a double by sophomore Alyssa Williamson (Scarborough, Maine). Felician reliever Ashley Owens (Lockport, N.Y.) (1-2) was able to escape further damage.

Felician was retired in order in the sixth, but Brackett reached on an error to start the bottom of the seventh, and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Currie induced two ground-outs and a pop-up to secure the victory for Merrimack.

Despite amassing only four hits, Felician left nine runners on base. Senior catcher Amanda Lopez (Riverbank, Calif.) was 2 for 4 with a solo home run, her second of the season.
