Concordia Slows Golden Falcon Offense

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. – The Felician University softball team was limited to a combined nine base hits while losing both ends of its Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader, 4-0 and 6-2, to host Concordia (N.Y.) College on Wednesday afternoon at Clipper Field.

Leadoff batter Audrey Gardus (Carbondale, Pa.) was 5 for 7 on the day for Concordia (8-5, 4-2 CACC).

In Game 1, Felician (10-14, 4-4) fell victim to a four-hit shutout by Clipper sophomore right-handed pitcher Sarah Ross (Dunmore, Pa.). All five Golden Falcons to reach base did so after two were out, and all were left stranded. Ross (4-3) recorded two strikeouts and issued one walk.

Concordia took the lead in the bottom of the second inning on a one-out RBI double by Kayla Luken (Beaverton, Ore.). But that was the only blemish on the line of Felician hurler Ashley Owens (Lockport, N.Y.) (4-6) until the fifth. In that frame, the Clippers broke the game open with three runs, two of which were unearned.

Gardus, Ross, and Luken collected two hits each for the Clippers. Felician freshman Zeaenna Brackett (Woodbury, N.J.) had a triple. Owens gave up eight hits and struck out two batters in a complete-game effort.

Concordia erased a 1-0 deficit in the nightcap with four runs in the bottom of the fourth. A sacrifice fly by Kayla Weber (Oak Ridge, N.J.) in the top of the sixth pulled the Golden Falcons to within 4-2, but Clipper senior second baseman Victoria Vickerman (Clinton, Conn.) hit a two run home run in the home half of the sixth.

Four of Felician's five hits were doubles, but none came around to score. Concordia senior righty Hannah Rubasky (Nanticoke, Pa.) (3-2) pitched six strong innings for the victory, giving up one earned run on four hits with four strikeouts and one walk. Gardus went 3 for 4, and Vickerman was 2 for 2, plus two walks, and drove in three runs.

Brynne Bauman (Hazlet, N.J.) had a second-inning RBI single for Felician.
