Box Score 2 LYNDHURST, N.J. – Felician University sophomore right-hander Ashley Owens (Lockport, N.Y./Starpoint) pitched a six-hit shutout to lead the Golden Falcons to a 1-0 victory over visiting Dominican (N.Y.) College in Game 1 of the teams' Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference softball doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon at Matera Field. Dominican bounced back to win the day's second game, 9-1.
Dominican (13-9, 6-1 CACC) entered the day in first place in the CACC.
In Game 1, Felician (11-15, 5-5) scratched across an unearned run in the bottom of the first inning. Freshman Zeaenna Brackett (Woodbury, N.J./Woodbury) led off with a single and advanced to second base on a groundout. A single by Amanda Lopez (Riverbank, Calif./Riverbank) put runners at the corners. On Racquel Manzo's (Whittier, Calif./La Habra) ground ball to third base, the throw home was in plenty of time to retire Brackett, but was mishandled, allowing the Golden Falcons to take the early lead.
After having escaped a two-on, two-out jam in the first, Owens avoided serious trouble until the sixth inning, when the Chargers saw their first two batters reach base on singles. Both runners moved up on a groundout. The next batter grounded to first base, and Kayla Weber (Oak Ridge, N.J./Jefferson Township) cut down the runner at home plate. Owens then induced a flyout to end the inning.
Owens (5-6) worked around a one-out single to retire Dominican in the seventh for her second shutout of the season. She struck out four batters and walked none. Brackett was 3 for 3, including her seventh triple of the season, tying the Felicain record held by Aimee Lopez. Amanda Lopez was 2 for 3.
Charger pitcher Desiree Joines (Stewartstown, Pa./Kennard-Dale) (8-4) took the hard-luck loss. She recorded five strikeouts and one walk in a six-hitter. Dominican's Emily Luzetsky (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) and Shannon Truppi (Little Ferry, N.J./Immaculate Conception) had two hits apiece.
Felician again took a first-inning lead in Game 2 when Brackett doubled and came around to score on a throwing error. But Dominican stormed ahead with four runs in the top of the third. Senior Anne Shiebler (Wrentham, Mass./King Philip) capped the rally with a two-run double.
Charger junior Elontay Collins (San Diego, Calif./Serra) had an RBI single in the fourth inning, and the visitors pulled away with four runs in the seventh. Dominican pitcher Jenna Maska (Warren, Mass./Pathfinder Vo. Tech.) did not allow an earned run in a four-hitter. She had five strikeouts and issued one walk
Jillian Regan (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) was 3 for 4 for Dominican. Collins went 2 for 3 with two RBI and three stolen bases. Brackett and Lopez each doubled for Felician.
