Softball Uses Power, Pitching To Win Pair

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

CLERMONT, Fla. – Felician University junior pitcher Dyonna Pagliocca (Wood-Ridge, N.J.) earned her first career victory and Golden Falcon freshmen Kayla Weber (Oak Ridge, N.J.) and Zeaenna Brackett (Woodbury, N.J.) each hit their first collegiate home runs as Felician defeated Notre Dame (Ohio) College, 6-3, in non-conference softball action during THE Spring Games on Friday morning at Hancock Park.

Earlier on Friday, the Golden Falcons (5-5) topped Lewis University, 7-4. Brackett went a combined 4 for 7 on the day.

Pagliocca (1-0) started and tossed four scoreless innings against Notre Dame (3-7). She allowed two hits and worked around four walks. She was staked to a 2-0 lead on the lefty-swinging Weber's homer to right field in the bottom of the second. Pagliocca then escaped a two-on, none-out jam in the third inning, eventually forcing NDC to leave the bases loaded.

After working a perfect fourth, Pagliocca was replaced by Ashley Owens (Lockport, N.Y.) to start the fifth. Owens gave up two singles but escaped unscathed, and Felician took full control with a four-run sixth. Brackett hit a three-run homer to straightaway center field for a 5-0 lead, and Owens, who had started the game as the designated player, sent an RBI single to center later in the frame.

NDC rallied to bring the tying run to the place in the top of the seventh. After the Falcons loaded the bases with one out, Mackenzie Wallace (Copley, Ohio) spoiled the shutout with a fielder's choice grounder, and two batters later, Maria Vanadia (Medina, Ohio) produced a two-run single. But with runners on first and second, Owens induced a ground ball to second base to end the game. She was credited with her first career save.

Brackett also doubled for Felician and Weber was 2 for 2 and scored twice. All ten of NDC's hits were singles.

Felician used a five-run fifth inning to earn a come-from-behind victory over Lewis in its first game on Friday morning. The Flyers broke a 1-1 tie with three runs in the top of the fourth. But Isabella Bradian (Clarksboro, N.J.) drove in a run with a fielder's choice grounder in the home half of the fourth to pull the Golden Falcons to within 4-2.

Felician scored all five of its runs in the fifth after two were out. With the bases loaded, Jeannette Roldan (Hesperia, Calif.) was hit by a pitch, and Owens drew a pinch-hit walk to tie the game. Racquel Manzo (Whittier, Calif.) came home on a passed ball, giving Felician a 5-4 edge, and with Bradian still at the plate, a wild pitch plated Roldan. Bradian then capped the rally with an RBI single.

Golden Falcon sophomore right-hander Kaila Gerber (Vincentown, N.J.) (2-0) was the beneficiary of the uprising. She pitched all seven innings, giving up six hits and four walks while striking out four batters. The Flyers (6-7) left 10 runners on base.

Brackett was 2 for 4 and Amanda Lopez (Riverbank, Calif.) hit a solo homer for Felician. Lewis' Jenna Cairo (Chicago, Ill.) drove in two runs.
