Box Score 2 CLERMONT, Fla. – The Felician University softball team was limited to a combined six base hits in its non-conference losses to California (Pa.) University and Long Island University-Post during the final day of its 10-game stay at THE Spring games on Wednesday at Hancock Park.
California is ranked No. 14 in the most recent national NCAA Division II coaches' poll. LIU Post received votes in that poll.
Wednesday afternoon's contest featured a pitchers' duel between California senior right-hander Megan Uher (Acme, Pa.) and Felician sophomore righty Ashley Owens (Lockport, N.Y.). Felician, the designated home team, was the first squad to dent the scoreboard, scratching across an unearned run in the bottom of the second inning. Sophomore Jeannette Roldan (Hesperia, Calif.) singled with one out, and scored two batters later on a dropped fly ball.
The Vulcans (10-1) drew even when senior third baseman Natalya Smarra (McKees Rocks, Pa.) launched a home run to lead off the fourth. Felician put a runner on third base with one out in the fifth, but could not score, and the teams entered the seventh inning knotted at 1-1.
With two outs and a runner on first base in the top of the seventh, California's Logan Blake (Jordan Station, Ontario) advanced to second on a passed ball. Following a walk, Kaity Finley (Latrobe, Pa.) singled home Blake with the go-ahead run. Felician put two runners on base with one out in the bottom of the seventh, but Uher came up with a strikeout and induced a groundout to secure California's second victory over the Golden Falcons this season.
Both pitchers turned in complete-game four-hitters. Uher (2-0) struck out seven batters and walked one, while Owens (1-5) recorded three strikeouts and issued three walks. Roldan finished 2 for 3 for the Golden Falcons. (6-10).
Wednesday night's game against the Pioneers was slated for 7 p.m., but did not start until nearly 9 p.m. due to runover from previous games. LIU Post, the designated home team, proved unaffected, jumping out to a 7-0 lead after two frames. Junior right fielder Melissa Peet (Monroe, Conn.) hit a grand slam home run to cap the Pioneers' five-run second-inning rally.
Junior second baseman Jackie Dueñas (Riverside, Calif.) hit a two-run homer in the top of the third to cut into Felician's deficit, but the Golden Falcons otherwise had trouble solving LIU Post freshman right-hander Hannah Olshevski (Robbinsville, N.J.), who fashioned a two-hitter. The game was stopped after the Pioneers scored a run in the fourth and two more in the sixth for the eight-run margin.
Peet finished 2 for 2 plus two walks, one of four Pioneers with multi-hit games. Mia Montoya (Cypress, Calif.) doubled and Dyonna Pagliocca (Wood-Ridge, N.J.) picked up four strikeouts in a 4 1/3-inning relief appearance for Felician.
