Box Score 2 LAKEWOOD, N.J. – Sophomore Ashley Owens (Lockport, N.Y.) earned a pair of complete-game pitching victories and went 5 for 8 with three runs batted in as the Felician University softball team concluded its 2016 regular season by sweeping a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader from host Georgian Court University on Saturday afternoon at GCU Field #1. Felician won Game 1, 15-3, in five innings before capturing Game 2, 8-5.
The Golden Falcons totaled 35 base hits for the afternoon. Sophomore left fielder Jeannette Roldan (Hesperia, Calif.) was 6 for 9 and scored four runs. Freshman Racquel Manzo (Whittier, Calif.) drove in three runs in each game, and classmate and leadoff hitter Zeaenna Brackett (Woodbury, N.J.) scored three runs in each contest.
Felician (17-29, 10-16) received favorable results during two other sets of CACC games later on Saturday, and remain in the running for a conference tournament berth. The Golden Falcons would qualify as the No. 8 and final seed if first-place Caldwell University wins both of its home games against Philadelphia University on Sunday.
Felician picked up 20 base hits, one shy of the program record, off of four Lion pitches in Saturday's opening game. The Golden Falcons scored five runs on six hits in the first inning, a rally capped by Owens' two-run single. The visitors then took full control by scoring four more times in the top of the second, including a three-run home run by freshman Mia Montoya (Cypress, Calif.).
Brackett's RBI single in the third was her 60th hit of the season, setting a Felician record. She had shared the previous mark of 59 with Taylor Parker (2013). She went 2 for 5 in Game 2 and now has 62 base hits.
Georgian Court put together five hits to plate three runs in the third to pull to within 11-3, but Felician tacked on four more scores in the fourth for the eventual final margin. Manzo had a two-run single among the scoring.
Owens gave up two earned runs on six hits in five innings. She struck out four batters and walked none, and went 3 for 4 with two RBI. Roldan was 4 for 4. Junior Kristin Hardiman (Howell, N.J.) had a double and two RBI for GCU (7-39, 6-20).
Owens keyed Felician's Game 2 victory by escaping a two-on, one-out jam in the bottom of the fifth inning with her team clinging to a 5-4 lead. Jackie Dueñas (Riverside, Calif.) then drove in a run with a sixth-inning single, and Felician tacked on two more in the seventh on Roldan's RBI double and a sacrifice fly by Manzo. A double by Bryana Smith (Robbinsville, N.J.) and an Alycia Marsello (North Kingstown, R.I.) RBI single in the bottom of the seventh extended GCU's life, but the hosts were unable to bring the potential tying run to the plate.
Felician led, 4-0 after 2 ½ innings. A two-run home run by Marsello capped a three-run third-inning rally for the Lions, but Felican scored in the fourth on Manzo's RBI single to make it 5-3.
The Golden Falcons out-hit GCU, 15-10. Duenas was 3 for 4 with three RBI, and five other Golden Falcons picked up a pair of hits. Owens battled through seven innings, scattering 10 hits with four strikeouts.
