Felician Advances To Day 2 Of CACC Softball Tournament

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

LAKEWOOD, N.J. – Sophomore Ashley Owens (Lockport, N.Y./Starpoint) pitched a five-hit shutout and went 2 for 3 to lead No. 8 seed Felician University to a 3-0 elimination game victory over No. 5 seed Post University during Day 1 of the 2016 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Championship tournament on Thursday afternoon on the campus of tournament host Georgian Court University.

Felician had lost to top seed and No. 15 nationally-ranked Caldwell University, 3-0, in first-round playoff action on Friday morning.

Thursday's results and the schedule for the rest of the event can be viewed at www.caccathletics.org/sports/sball/2015-16/releases/428Day1.

The final game of Day 1, a winners' bracket affair featuring No. 3 seed Wilmington (Del.) University and No. 7 Bloomfield College, was suspended during the sixth inning with Wilmington leading, 9-5. The game will be completed at 9 a.m. Felician plays another elimination contest at 11 a.m. against the loser of that game.

Georgian Court will provide Live Stats of Felician's game on Friday at www.sidearmstats.com/georgian/softball/. The CACC will also webstream the game live via CollegeTV Ticket at http://tinyurl.com/h5gekvm. If the Golden Falcons are successful, they will play again at 1 p.m., with the potential to participate in three elimination games on Friday.

Felician (18-30) took advantage of Post miscues to plate two runs in the top of the first inning of its afternoon elimination game. Zeaenna Brackett (Woodbury, N.J./Woodbury) led off with a walk and Jeannette Roldan (Hesperia, Calif./Oak Hills) followed with an infield single. A fielder's choice grounder left runners on first and third before Brackett came home on a wild pitch. One out later, Roldan scored on a dropped fly ball.

Owens (11-14) retired the first eight Eagle hitters. Only once did Post (25-23) put two runners on base in the same frame. That came in the fifth after two were out on singles by Marissa Cammarano (Bedford, Mass./Bedford) and Kristen Owens (Exton, Pa./Downingtown East). But the Felician right-hander induced a grounder to second base to escape trouble.

The Golden Falcons tacked on a run in the sixth on an RBI double by Amanda Lopez (Riverbank, Calif./Riverbank). Owens worked around a two-out error in the seventh to retire the Eagles and complete her third shutout of the season. She struck out five batters and walked none. Her counterpart, Post senior Samantha Esque (Springfield, Pa./Springfield), gave up one earned run on five hits with five strikeouts and one walk.

Kristen Owens and Kayla Kresley (Alburtis, Pa/Bethlehem Catholic) had two hits each for the Eagles.

Owens fashioned a three-hitter against Caldwell, the 2015 CACC Champion and the top-ranked team in the NCAA Division II East Region, on Friday morning, but the Golden Falcons left nine runners on base without scoring. Cougar junior right-hander Sydney Ponto (West Deptford, N.J./West Deptford) (16-7) pitched a four-hit shutout.

Senior Brielle Reighn (Runnemeade, N.J./Triton Regional) drove in all three Caldwell runs. She put the Cougars on the scoreboard in the first inning with a run-scoring groundout, then hit a two-run home run in the third. Felician brought the tying run to the plate with two outs in the seventh, but Ponto finished the shutout by recording a groundout to first base.

Roldan was 2 for 3 for the Golden Falcons.
