Box Score 2 LYNDHURST, N.J. – Chestnut Hill College scored in nine of its 10 offensive innings and collected 29 hits, including 13 for extra bases, while sweeping a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference softball doubleheader from host Felician University, 12-3 and 12-3, on Saturday afternoon at Matera Field. Both games were halted after five innings by the NCAA eight-run rule.
Senior Amanda Lopez (Riverbank, Calif./Riverbank) and freshman Mia Montoya (Cypress, Calif./John F. Kennedy) each had a home run among three hits on the day for Felician (11-21, 5-11 CACC).
For Chestnut Hill, junior shortstop Corie Apodaca (Ontario, Calif./Colony) had three doubles in each game. She finished the afternoon 6 for 8 with six doubles and seven runs batted in.
The Griffins plated three runs on four hits in the top of the first inning of Game 1. They moved ahead, 4-0, on an RBI double by Apodaca in the second, but Montoya blasted a two-run home run to center field, the first round-tripper of her career, to pull the Golden Falcons to within 4-2. Chestnut Hill took control, however, on an inside-the-park grand slam by freshman Ariel Magee (North Cape May, N.J./Lower Cape May) in the third.
CHC received an RBI single from Laura Eidam (South Salem, N.Y./John Jay) in the fourth, the tacked on three runs in the fifth. Felician scored an unearned run in the bottom of the fifth, but left runners on second and third in an attempt to extend the game.
Griffin pitcher Briannen Holloway (Corona, Calif./Corona) (5-11) struck out five batters and walked one in a five hitter. Magee was 3 for 4 and scored three runs, and Sofia Cedrone (Philadelphia, Pa./Neuman-Goretti) also joined Apodaca with three hits in CHC's 15-hit attack. Montoya was 2 for 2 for Felician.
The Griffins once again jumped out early in Game 2, plating six runs on six hits in the first inning. The Golden Falcons scored twice in the bottom of the first, including a run-scoring single from Lopez, but were otherwise held down by CHC senior right-hander Kaitlyn Johnson (New Boston, N.H./Goffstown Area) (5-9). Johnson scattered eight hits, struck out five batters, and walked none.
Chestnut Hill (10-28, 7-7) scored once in the third and twice in the fourth before Apodaca capped a three-run seventh inning rally with a two-run double. Johnson worked around a one-out home run by Lopez to retire the Golden Falcons in the bottom of the fifth. Apodaca finished with five RBI and Ashleigh Sharp (Dresher, Pa./Upper Dublin) was 3 for 3 with three RBI for the Griffins, who put together 14 hits.
Brynne Bauman (Hazlet, N.J./Raritan) was 2 for 2 and Lopez 2 for 3 for Felician.
