Softball Falls To 1-3 With Two Losses In Myrtle Beach

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Felician University softball team lost a pair of non-conference games on Saturday during the second of its three-day stay at the Snowbird Freeze-Out event. The Golden Falcons left 12 runners on base in a 7-6 morning loss to Southern New Hampshire University before dropping a 12-4, five-inning decision to Merrimack College.

Southern New Hampshire (3-1) received votes in the most recent NCAA Division II national coaches' poll.

Felician was the designated visiting team in both games, and got off to an early lead in each one. Against the Penmen, the Golden Falcons picked up two runs in the first on an RBI double by Mia Montoya (Cypress, Calif.) and an outfield error on Nicole Spiegelberg's (Blauvelt, N.Y.) single.

SNHU got a run back in the bottom of the first, then took the lead for good in the third on consecutive home runs by Erin Garczynski (Norwood, Mass.) and Erin Tyrell (Milford, N.H.). The Penmen used three walks and two singles to plate three-two out runs in the seventh and push their lead to 7-2.

Felician began the top of the sixth with four consecutive hits, including a two-run triple by Jackie Duenas (Riverside, Calif.) and Montoya's run-scoring single. The Golden Falcons continued to threaten, but left the bases loaded in the frame without scoring again. Sophomore Steph Donah (Clark, N.J.) led off the seventh with her first career home run, but Felician stranded the potential tying run on first base.

Montoya, Donah and freshman Bella Davis (Chula Vista, Calif.) had three hits apiece for Felician, which out-hit the Penmen, 13-6. Garczynski totaled five RBI for SNHU.

Felician (1-3) jumped on top of Merrimack, 3-0 in its afternoon game on Saturday. Spiegelberg lined a two-run single in the first inning, and Montoya an RBI single in the second. But after scoring twice in the third, the Warriors struck for eight fourth-inning runs, capped by a grand slam from senior Kaleigh Finigan (Medford, Mass.).

Spiegelberg led off the top of the fifth with a home run, but Merrimack brought home two runs in the bottom half to enact the NCAA eight-run rule.

Sophomore shortstop Zeaenna Brackett (Woodbury, N.J.) was 2 for 3 with two steals and two runs scored for the Golden Falcons. Merrimack (2-1) picked up eight hits and drew eight walks.
