Box Score MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Felician University softball team concluded its five-game season-opening trip to the Snowbird Freeze-Out event with a 3-0 non-conference victory over Molloy College on Sunday morning at Grand Park. Molloy (3-2) was the 2016 East Coast Conference champion.
Felician junior pitcher Ashley Owens (Lockport, N.Y.) (2-1) scattered seven hits in a complete-game win. Owens tossed her second shutout of the young season. She recorded just one strikeout (with one walk), but was the beneficiary of stellar Golden Falcon defense.
Three different left-side players – third-baseman Racquel Manzo (Whitter, Calif.), shortstop Zeaenna Brackett (Woodbury, N.J.) and left-fielder Jeannette Roldan (Hesperia, Calif.) made running catches in foul territory against the fence along the third-base side over the course of the game. Roldan also cut down a Molloy leadoff batter at second base trying to extend a single.
Felician (2-3), the designated visiting team, dented the scoreboard with a pair of unearned runs in the top of the third inning. With a runner on second base, Felician saw its inning extended on a two-out fielding error on Brackett's ground ball. Brackett advanced to second base when a throw home was not cut off. Senior Jackie Dueñas (Riverside, Calif.) then looped a ball to short right field. The Lion second baseman ranged far into right, but the ball caromed off her glove. The play was ruled a two-run single.
The Golden Falcons tacked on a run in the seventh when Roldan, who had led off with an infield hit, scored on a sacrifice fly by Brittney Lazar (Seaford, N.Y.). Owens, who had escaped a second-and-third, two-out jam in the first, then faced her most trouble since then. A double, single, and ground out placed runners on second and third with one out in the bottom of the seventh. Owens induced a ground ball back to her for the second out, then got the next hitter to ground out to short to preserve the shutout.
Junior Tiana DeOliveira (Mastic, N.Y.) was 2 for 2 plus a walk for Molloy. Lion pitcher Chelsea Hawks (Wading River, N.Y.) also went the distance, striking out five and walking none. She allowed one earned run on eight hits.
Sophomores Manzo (double) and Steph Donah (Clark, N.J.) were each 2 for 3 for Felician.
