Softball Rides Offense To Pair Of Victories; Duenas Reaches 100 Hits

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

CLERMONT, Fla. – The Felician University softball team hit two home runs in each game and amassed a total of 25 base hits during a pair of non-conference victories during PFX Athletics' THE Spring Games on Tuesday at Hancock Park. Felician defeated The College of Saint Rose, 6-2, in the afternoon before returning for an evening 8-5 triumph over Minnesota State University-Moorhead.

Sophomore first baseman Mia Montoya (Cypress, Calif.) went 5 for 8 on the day for the Golden Falcons (8-5). Senior second baseman Jackie Dueñas (Riverside, Calif.) picked up the 100th hit of her career during the win over MSU-Moorhead.

Against Saint Rose, Felician, the designated home team, fell behind 2-0 after the top of the first inning. However, freshman designated player Nicole Spiegelberg (Blauvelt, N.Y.) knotted the score in the bottom of the frame with a two-run home run. The Golden Falcons took the lead for good when Spiegelberg struck again, blasting another two-run longball in the third.

After her first-inning struggles, Felician junior right-hander Ashley Owens (Lockport, N.Y.) (5-2) righted herself and pitched shutout, five-hit ball for the final six. Owens struck out two batters and walked one in a complete-game effort, with the Golden Knights (2-7) leaving eight runners on base.

After Saint Rose lined into a double play with two runners on base to end the sixth, Felician tacked on two insurance runs in the home half. The Golden Falcons loaded the bases with one out. Racquel Manzo (Whittier, Calif.) singled home a run, and Jeannette Roldan (Hesperia, Calif.) followed with a walk. Owens worked around a two-out single in the seventh.

Montoya went 3 for 4 and Spiegelberg followed her two homers with a pair of walks. Elizabeth Jones (Watervliet, N.Y.) was 2 for 3 with a double for Saint Rose.

Later on Tuesday, the first career home run for sophomore right fielder Miranda Torres (Riverside, Calif.), a two-run shot in the top of the fifth, snapped a 4-4 tie and helped propel Felician to an 8-5 victory. Senior Dyonna Pagliocca (Wood-Ridge, N.J.) (1-1) scattered nine hits and two walks over five innings of relief to earn the pitching win.

Felician padded its edge on a two-run homer by sophomore Steph Donah (Clark, N.J.) with one out in the seventh. The Dragons, who had left the bases loaded without scoring in the fifth, brought the tying run to the plate with two outs in the seventh, but Pagliocca ended the game by inducing a groundout to second base.

Dueñas' milestone hit came in the first inning. She is the 16th member of Felician's 100-hit club. She stroked two of the Golden Falcons' 15 hits in the contest. Roldan picked up a pair of doubles and scored twice. Seniors Kristina Villalobos (Rowland Heights, Calif.) and Hanna Klug (Maple Lake, Minn.) were each 3 for 4 for MSU-Moorhead (4-9).
