Softball Halves Home Doubleheader With Bloomfield

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

LYNDHURST, N.J. – Felician University used a five-run first inning to springboard its way to a 6-2 Game 2 victory and a split of its Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference softball doubleheader with visiting Bloomfield College on Wednesday afternoon at the Lyndhurst Recreation Complex. Bloomfield emerged victorious in the day's opening game by a 1-0 score.

Senior third baseman Paige Lafferty (Liberty Hill, Texas/Clarendon College) went 5 for 6 on the day for the Bears (15-12, 5-9 CACC).

The Golden Falcons (17-16,  8-6) took advantage of a walk, two wild pitches, and two Bear errors to plate its five first-inning runs on just three hits in the nightcap. After a bases-loaded wild pitch scored Jeannette Roldan (Hesperia, Calif./Oak Hills), Jackie Duenas (Riverside, Calif./Arlington) and Steph Donah (Clark, N.J./Arthur L. Johnson) followed with consecutive RBI singles. Two batters and a pitching change later, Brynne Bauman (Hazlet, N.J./Red Bank Catholic) capped the rally with a two-run single.

Felician pitchers Ashley Owens (Lockport, N.Y./Starpoint) and Erin Powers (Aberdeen, N.J./Matawan Regional) combined on a seven-hitter with no walks, allowing one earned run. Owens (10-9) went the first four frames, striking out three batters and giving up four hits, and Powers tossed the final three for her fourth save of the season.

Donah went 2 for 3 to lead the Golden Falcons' seven-hit attack. Nicole Spiegelberg (Blauvelt, N.Y./Tappan Zee) scored twice, and Racquel Manzo (Whittier, Calif./La Habra) blasted a third-inning RBI double. Lafferty was 3 for 3 with a double and an RBI and losing pitcher Kirsten Wilson (Beaver Falls, Pa./Riverside) (7-5) was 2 for 3 with a double for Bloomfield.

In Game 1, Felician fell victim to Wilson's two-hit shutout. The game's only run came off of Owens in the top of the fourth when Bear junior Raylene Uribe (Riverside, Calif./Iowa Western CC) led off with a triple and came home on a wild pitch.

Felician threatened in both the fifth and sixth innings. Wilson issued consecutive two-out walks in the fifth, but Bloomfield catcher Jamie Cook (Elkland, Pa./(Corning CC) ended the rally by picking off the trail runner. In the sixth, again with two outs, Zeaenna Brackett (Woodbury, N.J./Woodbury) doubled and Roldan walked. Wilson ended that threat with a strikeout.

Wilson struck out 11 batters while walking three. Uribe went 3 for 3 and Laffery was 2 for 3 for the Bears. Freshman Bella Davis (Chula Vista, Calif./Eastlake) garnered the only other Felician hit, a third-inning single.
