Box Score 2 DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – Mercy College won both ends of its non-conference softball doubleheader from visiting Felician University on Thursday afternoon at Smith Field. The Mavericks claimed Game 1 in walkoff fashion, 4-3, before amassing 18 hits in a 14-0, five-inning Game 2 victory.
Felician (18-21) concluded regular-season non-conference play for the 2017 season. Mercy (24-8) is ranked No. 4 in the most recent NCAA Division II Committee East Region poll.
The Golden Falcons led Game 1, 2-1, after the first inning. Mia Montoya (Cypress, Calif.) lined an RBI double and Steph Donah (Clark, N.J.) followed with a run-scoring single in the visitors' half. Mercy picked up a run on a Felician error in the bottom.
Donah drove in another run on a fielder's choice grounder in the fifth, putting the Golden Falcons ahead, 3-1. A solo home run by Cassidy Wootten (Ardsley, N.Y.) leading off the sixth pulled Mercy within a run, but Felician relief pitcher Erin Powers (Aberdeen, N.J.) worked out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam later in the inning.
However, Felician's defense betrayed it again in the seventh. The Mavericks' first two batters in the frame reached on errors. Powers (6-4) recorded a flyout and a groundout, with the runners moving up on the latter. A RBI single by Kendall Meeks (Guysville, Ohio) tied the game, and when the Golden Falcons committed an outfield error on the play, Julie Gross (Port Monmouth, N.J.) continued around from second base to score the winning run.
Montoya had two doubles and scored twice for Felician, which left eight runners on base. Wootten was one of three players who went 2 for 4 for Mercy, which owned an 11-6 advantage in hits. Maverick sophomore Kaylee Stevens (Simi Valley, Calif.) (8-2) went the distance in the pitching circle, recording four strikeouts and issuing three walks.
Mercy took control early in Game 2, plating five first inning runs. Allie Pellizzaro (Victoria, British Columbia) stroked a two-run double and Wootten a two-run home run in the inning. The Mavericks then put their first eight hitters on base in the third, eventually tallying seven times. Two Mercy runs in the fourth completed the scoring.
Morgan Lloyd (East Lyme, Conn.) went 3 for 3 for Mercy. All five Felician hits were singles. Jeannette Roldan (Hesperia, Calif.) was on base twice for the Golden Falcons.
