Big Innings Propel Owens, Softball To Two Wins

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

PHILADELPHIA – Felician University scored five runs in the fourth inning of each game and senior pitcher Ashley Owens (Lockport, N.Y.) earned both wins as the Golden Falcons swept a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference softball doubleheader from the host Jefferson Rams (formerly Philadelphia University), 6-2 and 8-3, on Sunday afternoon at the Jefferson Softball Field.

Sunday's games marked the beginning of 2018 CACC play for both schools. Senior left fielder Jeannette Roldan (Hesperia, Calif.) went 5 for 8 on the day for Felician (5-12, 2-0 CACC). In the process, Roldan became the fifth player in the 22-year history of the Golden Falcon program to reach 150 career base hits.

Owens (5-6) tossed 11 innings on the day, and did not walk a batter. She combined to give up five runs on 14 hits with nine strikeouts.

Game 1 was tied, 1-1, after three frames. Roldan put Felician ahead with a two-out RBI single in the fourth. The inning was extended when C.J. Apacible's (Long Beach, Calif.) fly ball was dropped, allowing Roldan to come home for a 3-1 Golden Falcon edge. The visitors took full advantage of the error when Mia Montoya (Las Vegas, Nev.) came up with an RBI double, and Nicole Spiegelberg (Blauvelt, N.Y.) followed with a two-run home run.

Jefferson junior Courtney Wensel (Bechtelsville, Pa.) reached Owens for a run-scoring single in the fifth, but the right-hander retired the Rams in order in the sixth and seventh for the complete-game victory. Owens gave up six hits and recorded seven strikeouts.

Spiegelberg was 2 for 2 plus two walks and Apacible and Roldan were each 2 for 4 for Felician. Senior center fielder Erica D'Angelo (Broomall, Pa.) had a double for the Rams (4-10, 0-2).

The Golden Falcons took advantage of four Jefferson errors to plate five unearned runs in the nightcap. Felician junior second baseman Victoria Quercia (Monroe Township, N.J.) was 2 for 4 with a career-best three RBI.

The Rams stranded four runners and had another cut down at home plate in the first three innings off of Felician sophomore righty Alexa Raba (Iselin, N.J.). Roldan threw out a runner attempting to tag up from third base in the second inning, and Raba escaped a second-and-third, one-out jam in the third. Jefferson hurler Naomi Stas (Tuckerton, N.J.) held the Golden Falcon offense at bay, and the score remained 0-0 entering the fourth.

Jefferson's defense soon betrayed it, as the first two Felician batters of the fourth reached on errors. A single loaded the bases, and one out later, Quercia produced an RBI single to put the visitors on top. Stas appeared to avoid further damage when she induced a fielder's choice grounder and a comebacker, but she made a wild throw on the latter and all three runners came around to score. Roldan capped the five-run uprising with a run-scoring single.

Owens entered in relief, and the Rams greeted her with three runs on five hits, highlighted by a two-run single from sophomore designated player Madison Heno (Houston, Texas). In the fifth, Montoya singled, stole second base, and eventually scored on Steph Donah's (Clark, N.J.) ground ball for a 6-3 Felician edge. Owens held down the Rams for the balance of the game, and Quercia lined a two-run single in the seventh for the final margin.

Stas (2-4) struck out nine batters and gave up three earned runs in defeat. Jovanna Alfonsi (Hatfield, Pa.) and Emily Williams (Coatesville, Pa.) collected two hits apiece for Jefferson. Felician's Roldan went 3 for 4, and Montoya and Donah joined Quercia with two hits each.

Felician is scheduled to travel to Bronxville, N.Y. for a 3 p.m. CACC doubleheader against Concordia (N.Y.) College on Tuesday.
