Post Pulls Away In CACC Women's Lacrosse Opener

Box Score

WATERBURY, Conn. – Post University closed with an 8-1 run over the final 12 minutes to secure a 16-6 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference women's lacrosse victory over visiting Felician University on Tuesday afternoon at LaMoy Field. The game was the first CACC contest of 2018 for both schools.

Felician (0-5, 0-1 CACC) was ending a 12-day competitive layoff. Golden Falcon sophomore midfielder Christianna Louzan (Manchester, N.J.) scored three goals, picking up her second consecutive hat trick, and freshman Jashima Brathwaite (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) added two scores for Felician.

Post freshman attack Sydney Hogan (Northford, Conn.) led all players with six points on five goals and one assist. Eagle junior midfielder Gabriela Middleton (Coral Springs, Fla.) totaled three goals and two assists.

The Golden Falcons were the first team on the scoreboard, moving out to their first lead of the season. Just 39 seconds into the contest, Felician sophomore Winnie Huang (Parlin, N.J.) caught a pass from freshman Emileigh Esposito (Beachwood, N.J.) and maneuvered the ball into the net. It was the first collegiate point for Esposito.

Just over three minutes of clock time later, the Eagles (1-6, 1-0) took the lead for good on goals by Middleton and Jaylene Souto (Middletown, R.I.), and extended to a 3-1 edge at the 21:55 mark. Louzan's marker 33 seconds later chopped the visitors' deficit in half, but Post tallied five of the final six scores of the first half, including one by Hogan at 0:14, to head into intermission ahead, 8-3.

Felician held the Eagles off the scoreboard for the first 18 minutes of period two. The Golden Falcons, however, could only slice two goals out of Post's lead in that time. After Brathwaite found the back of the net at 20:47, the 8-5 score held for more than nine minutes.

Hogan's unassisted tally with 11:45 to play appeared to swing the momentum in favor of the hosts, who put the game away with four more scores in a period of three minutes, 44 seconds. In the process, the Eagles took the game clock down to 5:20 with a 12-5 edge.

Post amassed a 42-19 shot advantage, but Louzan led all individuals with 10. Felician sophomore goalie Qamar Smith (Carteret, N.J.) made 15 saves and picked up four ground balls. Eagle senior Toni Deren (Greenlawn, N.Y.) enjoyed a strong two-way game with a goal, two assists, four ground balls, and seven draw controls. Post goalie Noreen Donnelly (Staten Island, N.Y.) was credited with 10 saves in victory.

Brathwaite paced the Felician defense with four ground balls and two caused turnovers. Louzan controlled five draws.

Felician is scheduled to host a pair of games in Lyndhurst, N.J. this weekend. The Golden Falcons are slated to entertain Shepherd University on Friday at 2 p.m. before returning to CACC play with a 7 p.m. tilt against Holy Family University on Saturday.
