Montoya Powers Softball To Sweep In Home Opener

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

LYNDHURST, N.J. – Junior third baseman Mia Montoya (Las Vegas, Nev./John F. Kennedy [Calif.]) went 4 for 7 with three runs scored and seven runs batted in to help lead Felician University to a sweep of its Central Atlantic Collegiate Collegiate Conference softball doubleheader, 10-2 and 9-8, over visiting Goldey-Beacom College on Wednesday afternoon at the Lyndhurst Recreation Complex.

Felician (7-12, 4-0 CACC) was playing its 2018 home openers. The Golden Falcons have won five consecutive games.

Golden Falcon freshman shortstop C.J. Apacible (Long Beach, Calif./Lakewood) went 5 for 8 and drove in the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning of Game 2. Junior center fielder Steph Donah (Clark, N.J./Arthur L. Johnson) was 5 for 7 on the day. Junior third baseman Rachel Davis (Bethel, Del./Delmar) went 4 for 6 in the twinbill for Goldey-Beacom (0-11, 0-6).

Felician senior right-hander Ashley Owens (Lockport, N.Y./Starpoint) was the winning pitcher in both contests. She tossed a seven-hit complete game in the opener, which was halted in the bottom of the sixth due to the NCAA eight-run rule. Owens entered in relief in Game 2 and tossed six more frames, and was the beneficiary of the Golden Falcons' comeback from a 6-1 first-inning deficit.

Felician led, 4-0, after three innings of Game 1. Victoria Quercia (Monroe Township, N.J./Monroe Township) and Jeannette Roldan (Hesperia, Calif./Oak Hills) had RBI singles during a three-run second, and Isabella Bradian (Mount Royal, N.J./Kingsway Regional) blasted an RBI double in the third.

The Lightning reached Owens for a pair in the fourth, receiving RBI singles from Taylor Beres (Middletown, Del./Red Lion) and Zoe Lockwood (Chesapeake City, Md./Bohemia Manor) among four hits. But Felician restored its four-run edge with two runs in the bottom of the inning, with run-scoring hits from Montoya and Apacible.

The Golden Falcons ended the game with four sixth-inning scores, jumpstarted by Roldan's two-run home run. Later, Montoya doubled home a run, and scored on a Donah single for the 10-2 final. Roldan finished 3 for with three RBI as part of the hosts' 13-hit attack. Beres and Kasey Goshorn (Salisbury, Md./Mardela) had two hits apiece for GBC.

The Lightning plated six unearned runs in the top of the first inning of the nightcap. GBC picked up four hits and a walk, and took advantage of three Golden Falcon errors. Davis and Dianna Gatto (Jefferson, N.J./Jefferson) had two-run singles in the inning.

After tallying a run in the first, Felician came all the way back to take the lead with six more in the second, rallying with two outs and no one on. Following a single and a walk, an error extended the inning. Montoya took advantage by belting a grand slam home run. The blast was her 100th career hit, making her the 19th Felician softball player to reach that milestone. Felician put two more runners on base, and they came around to score on a throwing error.

The Golden Falcons scored again in the third, but GBC matched it in the fourth to trail, 8-7. In the sixth, the Lightning tied the game on Goshorn's RBI groundout.

In the last of the seventh, Keelee Davis (Chula Vista, Calif./Eastlake) and Quercia each singled, and both moved up on Monica Laverty's (Lyndhurst, N.J./Lyndhurst) sacrifice. Roldan walked to load the bases, and Apacible hit a sharp grounder to the glove side of the drawn-in shortstop, allowing Davis to score the winning run.

Apacible and Donah finished with three hits each, and Montoya totaled five RBI. Owens gave up two runs (one earned) on four hits and struck out four without a walk in six innings of relief. Davis went 3 for 4 with three RBI for the Lightning.

Felician has Easter weekend off, and returns to action with a CACC doubleheader at Nyack College on Apr. 3.
