Box Score 2 LYNDHURST, N.J. – The Felician University softball team hit five home runs, including a school-record-tying four in Game 2, as it swept a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader from visiting Chestnut Hill College, 8-0 and 7-2, on Friday afternoon at the Lyndhurst Recreation Complex. The games were make-ups from a snow-out on Mar. 28.
Junior center fielder Steph Donah (Clark, N.J./Arthur L. Johnson) went 3 for 5 on the day. Her third-inning single in Game 1 was the 100th base hit of her career. She is the 20th Golden Falcon to reach that figure in the program's 22-year history.
Donah put Felician (14-15, 11-3 CACC) on the scoreboard with a solo homer leading off the second inning of the day's opening game. The Golden Falcons went on to tack on two unearned runs in the frame for a 3-0 lead.
The hosts pulled away in the third. Freshman C.J. Apacible (Long Beach, Calif./Lakewood) drove a run-scoring double to right-center field. One out later, Donah grounded her milestone hit into the second-base hole. After Donah stole second base, Nicole Spiegelberg (Blauvelt, N.Y./Tappan Zee) drove a two-run single through the right side. Speigelberg later scored on an outfield error for a 7-0 Golden Falcon edge.
Junior Mia Montoya (Las Vegas, Nev./John F. Kennedy [Calif.]) singled home Apacible in the fourth for an eight-run spread, which Donah preserved by throwing out a runner at home plate from her center field position in the top of the fifth. When Felician senior right-hander Ashley Owens (Lockport, N.Y./Starpoint) retired the final two batters of the fifth, the game was ended via the NCAA's eight-run rule.
Owens (11-7) scattered seven hits, all singles, in her first shutout of the season. She recorded four strikeouts and did not walk or hit a batter. Apacible had two doubles and joined Donah with a pair of hits. Junior third baseman Lily Winn (Los Angeles, Calif./Burbank) was 2 for 3 for CHC (1-19, 1-12).
The Griffins were the first team on the scoreboard in the nightcap, taking advantage of a two-out Golden Falcon error. But Felician junior righty Erin Powers (Aberdeen, N.J./Matawan Regional) induced a pop-up to the next hitter, forcing Chestnut Hill to leave the bases loaded and score only one run.
Powers' escape proved important when Spiegelberg hit a two-run home run in the home half of the second, giving the hosts the lead they would never relinquish. Felician's Jeannette Roldan (Hesperia, Calif./Oak Hills) lined a two-run shot in the third to put her team ahead, 4-1.
With two out and a runner on, Powers allowed consecutive fifth-inning singles, the latter by pinch-hitter Ariel Magee (North Cape May, N.J./Lower Cape May) bringing home a run. But again she limited the damage to a single run. And again, her offense rewarded her in the home half, this time with Spiegelberg and freshman Keelee Davis (Chula Vista, Calif./Eastlake) launching back-to-back round-trippers for a 6-2 lead. Donah produced an RBI single in the sixth for the final margin.
Powers (3-4) gave up seven singles, to seven different players, in a complete-game effort, as the Griffins left 11 runners on base. Davis' home run was her first as a collegian.
Felician is back in action on Saturday, traveling to Lakewood for a CACC twinbill at Georgian Court University at 2 p.m.
