Box Score 2 LAKEWOOD, N.J. – The Felician University softball team contained the high-powered offense of Georgian Court University long enough to win both ends of its Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader from the host Lions, 4-3 and 9-5, on Saturday afternoon at SEI Investments Field. Felician senior pitcher Ashley Owens (Lockport, N.Y.) earned a complete-game victory in the opener and a three-inning save in the nightcap.
Georgian Court (20-15, 11-5 CACC) leads the CACC in home runs and slugging percentage, but saw only four of its 15 hits on Saturday go for extra bases. The Golden Falcons issued six walks, three in each game, to the league's top hitter, GCU junior Samantha Reilly (Toms River, N.J.). The Lions stranded 19 baserunners on the day.
Felician senior left fielder Jeannette Roldan (Hesperia, Calif.) went 4 for 9 from the leadoff spot in the batting order. The two wins solidified the Golden Falcons' hold on second place in the 14-team CACC.
During Game 1, the visitors erased an early 1-0 deficit with three runs in the top of the third inning. With one out, Roldan tripled and scored on a groundout by C.J. Apacible (Long Beach, Calif.) to tie the game. Mia Montoya (Las Vegas, Nev.) lined a single, and came all the way around to score on a throwing error on Steph Donah's (Clark, N.J.) grounder. A wild pitch brought Donah home and put Felician ahead, 3-1.
The Golden Falcons (16-15, 13-3) tacked on a run in the fourth when Isabella Bradian (Mount Royal, N.J.) sprinted home on Apacible's short sacrifice fly. The insurance would prove crucial. Felician left the bases loaded without scoring in the fifth, and Reilly homered in the home half to pull the Lions to within 4-2.
Georgian Court closed to within one run on Elisa Lopez's (North Bergen, N.J.) sixth-inning RBI single, and the hosts went on to load the bases with none out. Owens induced a force at home plate before recorded a pair of strikeouts to escape with the lead intact.
Felician missed a chance to add on in the seventh, and the Lions began the bottom half with two walks and a sacrifice. Owens struck out the next batter, bringing up Lopez, who lined a ball that seemed ticketed for left field. But third-baseman Montoya snatched it out of the air with a lunge to give the Golden Falcons the dramatic win.
Owens struck out a season-high nine batters in a seven-hitter. Roldan was 2 for 4. Junior Mikaela Power (Atco, N.J.) was 2 for 3 for the Lions.
Felician erased a 5-3 Game 2 deficit with two runs in the top of the fourth inning. The Golden Falcons loaded the bases with one out on a double, walk, and error before receiving a RBI single from Roldan and an RBI groundout from Apacible. After Felician took the lead in the fifth on Bradian's RBI single, it turned back to Owens in the pitching circle.
Owens faced one batter over the minimum in three hitless frames to pick up her second save of the season. The Golden Falcons added two runs in the sixth on Montoya's home run and another in the seventh on a second RBI single from Roldan.
Junior righty Erin Powers (Aberdeen, N.J.) (4-4) worked through four innings for the win. She yielded five runs (four earned) on eight hits with four strikeouts and four walks. Montoya hit two home runs and drove in five runs, and joined Bradian, Roldan and Apacible with two hits apiece. Malia Black (Concord, N.C.) had a triple among two hits for GCU, while Marissa Trezza (Bethpage, N.Y.) was 2 for 4 with a double and scored twice.
Felician will step out of CACC play to travel to East Stroudsburg University on Tuesday.
