Box Score 2 LYNDHURST, N.J. – Felician University senior pitcher Ashley Owens (Lockport, N.Y./Starpoint) tossed a five-hit shutout and the Golden Falcons pushed across a third-inning unearned run in their 1-0 victory over visiting Post University in Game 1 of the teams' Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference softball doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon at the Lyndhurst Recreation Complex. Post produced all of its offense in the fourth inning to claim Game 2, 4-2.
Pitching was the order of the day, and Felician (17-16, 14-4 CACC) claimed the day's opening contest despite scratching just three singles off of Eagle freshman righty Bridget Betley (Fairfield, N.J.) (3-3). Post stranded a pair of baserunners in both the first and second frames off of Owens. After she retired the Eagles in order in the third, the Golden Falcons took advantage of a pair of miscues by the visitors to dent the scoreboard.
Sophomore Monica Laverty (Lyndhurst, N.J./Lyndhurst) led off the bottom of the third with a walk, and one out later, C.J. Apacible (Long Beach, Calif./Lakewood) also drew a base on balls. Mia Montoya (Las Vegas, Nev./John F. Kennedy) popped up and was called out on the infield fly rule, but the ball was mishandled and both baserunners advanced. Laverty scored when a potential inning-ending ground ball by Steph Donah (Clark, N.J./Arthur L. Johnson) was misplayed for an error.
Post put a runner on in each of the last four innings, but never moved one past first base. Owens (13-7) finished with five strikeouts and two walks. Skylar Devorin (Millville, Del./Freehold) had a double for the Eagles, the game's only extra base hit. Felician's three safeties came from Nicole Spiegelberg (Blauvelt, N.Y./Tappan Zee), Isabella Bradian (Mount Royal, N.J./Kingsway Regional) and Victoria Quercia (Monroe Township, N.J./Monroe Township).
Felician took an early lead in Game 2 on RBI doubles by Quercia in the second inning and Owens, starting as the designated player, in the third. But the Eagles (16-18, 14-6) took the lead for good in the fourth, reaching Golden Falcon junior Erin Powers (Aberdeen, N.J./Matawan Regional) (4-5) for four runs on four hits.
With one out and runners on second and third, Cassidy Petrie (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by-the-Sea scored a run by singling through the right side, and Leyri Rivera (Dover, N.J/Dover) tied the game with an RBI single up the middle. Powers reached the precipice of escaping by recording a strikeout, but then issues a four-pitch walk and allowed a go-ahead two-run single to Demi Rivera (Hazlet, N.J./St. John Vianney).
Post starter Leslie Denis (Swansea, Mass./Case) (7-6) danced her way out of a two-on, two-out jam in the fourth before giving way to freshman Leigha Goldsack (Rutherford, N.J./Rutherford). The young right-hander held the Felician offense at bay for three three-hit innings, earning her third save of the season.
Apacible and Donah were each 3 for 4 for the Golden Falcons. Owens pitched three innings of scoreless relief, giving her 10 shutout innings for the day. Petrie and Leyri Rivera were among four Eagles with two hits each.
Felician travels to New Castle, Del., on Saturday to take on regionally-ranked Wilmington (Del.) University.
