Softball Allows 30 Hits, Loses Two To Dominican

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

LYNDHURST, N.J. – The Felician University softball team fell to large early deficits in both games and was swept in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader by visiting Dominican (N.Y.) College, 7-4 and 12-4, on Thursday afternoon at the Lyndhurst Recreation Complex. Dominican amassed 30 base hits on the day.

While both teams have already qualified for next week's CACC Championship tournament, the pair of victories allowed the Chargers (21-15, 15-7) to pass Felician in the CACC standings as several schools jostle for seeds.

Golden Falcon freshman shortstop C.J. Apacible (Long Beach, Calif./Lakewood) was on base six times for the day, going 4 for 5 plus two walks. Sophomore right fielder Samantha Fitzgerald (Fishkill, N.Y./John Jay) was 6 for 7 with six RBI and junior catcher Emily Luzetsky (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) went 5 for 6 and drove in five runs for Dominican.

The Chargers broke open Game 1 with five runs on five hits in the top of the second inning. The visitors loaded the bases with no one out on a single, error and walk. Luzetsky and Rajene Bowe (Ellendale, Del./Milford) delivered RBI singles, and a Fitzgerald hit drove in two runs. Taylor Daniels (Watervliet, N.Y./Watervliet) capped the rally with a run-scoring double.

A two-run double by Apacible in the third brought Felician closer, but the 5-2 score held until Dominican picked up two runs in the fifth, using three Golden Falcon errors and a two-run Luzetsky single. Charger freshman pitcher Sarah Gedeon (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) kept the hosts off the scoreboard until the seventh. A two-run double by Nicole Spiegelberg (Blauvelt, N.Y./Tappan Zee) provided what would become the final margin, and a two-out Keelee Davis (Chula Vista, Calif./Eastlake) hit brought the tying run to the plate. But Gedeon induced a pop-up to end the contest.

Gedeon (3-1) gave up three earned runs on nine hits in a complete-game victory. She struck out seven Golden Falcons and walked four. Luzetsky was 3 for 4 with three RBI and Fitzgerald and Daniels were each 2 for 3.

For Felician (18-21, 15-9), senior Jeannette Roldan (Hesperia, Calif./Oak Hills) was 2 for 4 with a double and a run scored. She tied two Felician records – career hits (180) and single-season doubles (16) – held by Taylor Parker. Apacible had two doubles and Spiegelberg was also 2 for 3.

Game 2 started even more inauspiciously for the Golden Falcons, as the Chargers led, 10-2, after two frames. Dominican eventually posted 19 base hits in their five offensive innings. Senior Alyssa Schwed (Kinnelon, N.J./Kinnelon) hit a two-run home run to jump-start a four-run first-inning rally, and a two-run single by Jillian Regan (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) and Luzetsky's two-run double highlighted the Chargers' six-run, six-hit second.

Trailing, 12-2, in the fifth, Felician made a bid to extend the game. After three consecutive one-out singles loaded the bases, the Golden Falcons scored a run on Spiegelberg's groundout and another on a wild pitch. But a flyout ended the game due to the NCAA 8-run rule.

Fitzgerald was 4 for 4 with four RBI and Bowe and Shailei Kraft (Waverly, N.Y./Waverly) collected three hits each for Dominican. Felician's Apacible was 2 for 2 plus a walk and sophomore right fielder Isabella Bradian (Mount Royal, N.J./Kingsway Regional) went 2 for 3.

Felician concludes its regular season with a 4 p.m. home doubleheader on Saturday against the University of the Sciences. Seniors Ashley Owens (Lockport, N.Y./Starpoint) and Roldan will be honored in a ceremony between games.
