Softball Surrenders Leads In Pair Of Florida Setbacks

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

CLERMONT, Fla. – The Felician University softball team was unable to hold on to slim leads during non-conference losses to West Virginia Wesleyan College and Edinboro University during the PFX Athletics Spring Games on Saturday afternoon at the Hancock Recreation Complex. Felician started its day with a 6-4 loss to WVWC before falling to Edinboro, 9-6.

The Golden Falcons (3-6) completed the second day of their six-day, 10-game spring break trip to Central Florida.

Felician, the designated home team against West Virginia Wesleyan, erased a 2-0 deficit with three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Senior Isabella Bradian (Mount Royal, N.J.) created the Golden Falcons' first score when she reached on an error, stole second base, and came around on two wild pitches. Sophomore C.J. Apacible (Long Beach, Calif.) restarted the rally with a double, and two outs later, junior Nicole Spiegelberg (Blauvelt, N.Y.) launched a go-ahead two-run home run.

Felician's edge was short-lived. The Bobcats tied the score with an unearned run in the sixth. In the seventh, WVWC put runners on second and third bases with one out following an error, sacrifice, single and stolen base. Bobcat sophomore Kennedy Cowa (Houston, Texas) delivered a tiebreaking two-run single, and later scored on another Golden Falcon miscue for a 6-3 lead.

After Bradian again scored on a wild pitch in the home half of the seventh, the Golden Falcons continued the drama by loading the bases with two outs. But Bobcat hurler Hannah Hudson (Blackstone, Va.) (1-1) coaxed a swinging strikeout to complete a six-hitter.

Felician freshman left-hander Martarina Crumb (Branchville, N.J.) took the loss despite not giving up an earned run. She yielded four unearned tallies on five hits in three innings of relief work. Spiegelberg finished 2 for 3 and freshman Krystina Lorch (Hemet, Calif.) also had two hits for the Golden Falcons. Sophomore Lauryn King (Chester, Va.) was 2 for 4 with a homer for the Bobcats (2-2), and Hudson registered 10 strikeouts.

Both offenses were clicking early when Felician took on Edinboro later Saturday afternoon. By the time the third inning had ended, the Fighting Scots, the designated home team, had already erased a pair of multi-run deficits to take a 6-5 advantage. After Edinboro senior Roni Lipinski (Fairview, Pa.) raced around from second base to score on a third-inning passed ball, her team never trailed again.

The Fighting Scots (1-1) tacked on a run in the fourth on a Brittany Allen (Warren, Ohio) RBI double. The Golden Falcons matched it on Jaimie Parisi's (South Hackensack, N.J.) run-scoring single in the sixth to trail 7-6. Senior righty Amanda Metz (East Aurora, N.Y.) entered the game from the Fighting Scot bullpen and struck out the next two hitters, forcing Felician to leave the bases loaded.

Edinboro pushed across a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth, and Metz retired Felician in order in the seventh to earn a save.

Felician senior Steph Donah (Clark, N.J.) was 2 for 3 with a three-run home run. Sophomore Keelee Davis (Chula Vista, Calif.) also homered for the Golden Falcons, as did senior Cheyenne Bothun (St. Mary's, Pa.) for the Fightning Scots. Allen finished 3 for 4 with two doubles and two RBI.

Felician faces a quick turnaround on Sunday, with morning timeslots against non-league foes Minnesota State University-Mankato and Ashland University in Clermont.
