Box Score 2 BENSALEM, Pa. – The Felician University softball team came up on the short end of two high-scoring affairs on Saturday afternoon, losing both games of its Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader to host Holy Family University, 12-7 and 13-11, at Bensalem High School.
Felician (7-14, 3-3 CACC) accumulated a combined 28 base hits on Saturday, only to see Holy Family come up with 30. Tiger sophomore first baseman Taylor Nichols (Salisbury, Md.) went 5 for 10 with three home runs and 10 RBI.
Junior designated player Monica Laverty (Lyndhurst, N.J.) paced the Golden Falcon offense. She combined in the two games to bat 5 for 7 and drive in four runs. Felician freshman third baseman Jackie Ribaudo (Staten Island, N.Y.) also had four RBI for the afternoon.
In Game 1, Felician cut an early 4-0 deficit in half on Nicole Spiegelberg's (Blauvelt, N.Y.) two-out, two-run double in the top of the third inning. But Holy Family (2-14, 2-2) took control with a six-run bottom of the third. Junior Julia Vizza (Philadelphia, Pa.) and Nichols hit three-run homers, each off a different Golden Falcon pitcher.
Trailing, 12-3, after four frames, Felician rallied for four runs in the fifth to extend the game. Ribaudo's two-run double highlighted the uprising. But the Golden Falcons could manage only one baserunner in the final two frames off Tiger reliever Ashley Remington (Collegeville, Pa.), and did not make a further dent in their deficit.
HFU saw six of its 12 hits go for extra bases. Nichols was 3 for 5 with a double, homer and five RBI. Olivia Nolan (Shoreline, Wash.) went 3 for 4, and Madelyn Yeager (Hatboro, Pa.) was 2 for 2 with a home run. Spiegelberg was one of four Golden Falcons to enjoy a multi-hit game, finishing 2 for 2, and Ribaudo drove in three runs. Both offenses struck out only one time.
Felician broke a 2-2 tie with a seven-run third inning in the nightcap. With one out, the visitors loaded the bases on a single, error and walk. Remington, starting in the circle this game, recorded a strikeout and moved closer to escaping. But a two-run single by Laverty launched a string of five consecutive run-scoring hits for Felician. Freshman Krystina Lorch (Hemet, Calif.) produced a two-run double during the stretch.
Another RBI single from Laverty gave the Golden Falcons a 10-2 lead midway through the fourth. But the hosts came back with a vengeance. The first four Tigers to bat in the bottom of the fourth reached base. After a lineout, a two-run homer by Nichols pulled HFU to within 10-7. The Tigers scratched across another run later in the frame.
Ribaudo brought home Steph Donah (Clark, N.J.) with a single for what Felician hoped would be a sixth-inning insurance run, providing an 11-8 edge. But the Tigers had another rally left in them. A Nichols two-run round-tripper with one out made it 11-10, and HFU followed with consecutive singles. A fielder's choice grounder brought the Golden Falcons one out away from moving to the seventh with a lead. Following a wild pitch, however, Abigail Smith (Elkton, Md.) delivered a go-ahead two-run double and came home on a hit by Megan Cappadora (Manchester, Md.).
Remington (1-5) was still in the circle to start the seventh, and retired Felician in order on three groundouts. She allowed 15 hits in the complete-game effort, but only three of her 11 runs given up were earned. Tiger senior Sam Klem (San Diego, Calif.) was 4 for 4.
Laverty (3 RBI) and Donah were each 3 for 4 in defeat for Felician. Spiegelberg and sophomore Keelee Davis (Chula Vista, Calif.) turned in their second 2-hit games of the day. The Golden Falcons tied the school record for most runs scored in a loss, plating 11 for the third time.
Felician steps out of league play for a make-up doubleheader against Mercy College on Monday at 2 p.m in Lyndhurst.
