Box Score 2 LYNDHURST, N.J. – Caldwell University scored five times in the final three innings to pull away for a 6-1 Game 2 victory and a sweep of its Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference softball doubleheader from host Felician University on Wednesday afternoon at the Lyndhurst Recreation Complex. Caldwell captured the day's first game, 15-5, in five innings.
The Cougars (8-10, 4-0 CACC) have won the last two CACC championships.
Felician senior catcher Mia Montoya (Las Vegas, Nev./John F. Kennedy [Calif.]) collected two hits in each game. Montoya drove in four of the Golden Falcons' six runs on the afternoon.
Game 2 saw the teams even, 1-1, after four frames. Both Felician freshman pitcher Trinity Garcia (West Covina, Calif./West Covina) and Caldwell rookie hurler Mariah Culver (Owego, N.Y./Tioga Cenral) yielded single runs in the second inning. Laura Stansell (Plantation, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) lined an RBI single for the Cougars, but Montoya answered in the home half with a solo home run.
Caldwell took the lead for good in the fifth. With runners on first and third bases and two outs, pinch-runner Melissa Rini (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./American Heritage) attempted to steal but stopped after the throw through. She was retired but stayed in a rundown long enough for Nora Conway (Chicago, Ill./Loyola Academy) to scamper home from third base.
The Cougars broke the game open with three runs in the sixth and tacked on another in the seventh. Culver (3-6), meanwhile, went the distance on a six-hitter with six strikeouts and no walks. Montoya was 2 for 3 and Steph Donah (Clark, N.J./Arthur J. Johnson) doubled among two hits for the Golden Falcons (7-18, 3-5). Caldwell received a pair of hits apiece from Stansell and Conway.
Caldwell jumped out to a 6-0 lead after 2 ½ innings of Game 1, only to see the Golden Falcons plate five runs in the home half of the third. Nicole Spiegelberg (Blauvelt, N.Y./Tappan Zee) blasted a two-run double and Montoya a three-run double during the rally.
The Cougar offense, however, continued to perform, eventually racking up 14 base hits. Caldwell junior Jessie Johnston (Livermore, Calif./Grenada) hit a grand slam home run to cap a five-run fourth and highlighted a four-run fifth with a two-run double. When the Golden Falcons were retired in order in the bottom of the fifth, the game ended on the NCAA eight-run rule.
Johnston went 2 for 4 with seven RBI. Sophomores Paige Sandoval (Aliso Viejo, Calif./Aliso Niguel) (three runs, three RBI) and Maya Rodriguez (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./American Heritage) had three hits each for Caldwell. Felician's Montoya was 2 for 2.
Felician travels to Philadelphia on Saturday for a noon doubleheader against the University of the Sciences.
