Garcia, Spiegelberg Lift Felician To Conference Sweep

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

LYNDHURST, N.J. – Sophomore Trinity Garcia (West Covina, Calif./West Covina) was the winning pitcher in both games and junior first baseman Nicole Spiegelberg (Blauvelt, N.Y./Tappan Zee) homered in each one to help lead Felician University to a sweep of its Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference softball doubleheader with visiting Concordia (N.Y.) College on Wednesday afternoon at the Lyndhurst Recreation Complex. Felician captured the first game, 10-2, in five innings before winning the nightcap, 13-7.

Sophomore shortstop C.J. Apacible (Long Beach, Calif./Lakewood) and sophomore catcher Keelee Davis (Chula Vista, Calif./Eastlake) both had two hits in each game for the Golden Falcons (11-24, 7-9 CACC). Concordia shortstop Stephanie Ryder (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) batted a combined 6 for 7.

The Clippers (9-15, 5-11) reached Garcia for two runs in the top of the first inning of Game 1 on a run-scoring double by Carly Berezny (Oxford, N.J./Warren Hills) and an RBI single from Ryder. But Felician erupted for seven runs in the home half of the frame.

With one out, Spiegelberg gave the Golden Falcons the lead for good with a three-run home run to right field. Felician continued the rally, loading the bases on a single and two walks. A double by Jackie Ribaudo (Staten Island, N.Y./Moore Catholic) plated two runs, and following a Clipper error, leadoff batter Apacible capped the rally with her second hit of the inning, an RBI single.

Garcia kept Concordia of the scoreboard the rest of the way. Felician extended to an 8-2 edge on a Mia Montoya (Las Vegas, Nev./John F. Kennedy [Calif.]) sacrifice fly in the second, then pushed across two runs in the fourth. Garcia allowed two singles after two were out in the fifth, but followed up with a strikeout to end the game.

Felician collected eight hits and drew seven walks. Davis was 2 for 2 plus a base on balls, and Apacible finished 2 for 3. Spiegelberg's home run made her just the second player in the 23-year history of Felician softball to reach 100 career runs batted in. Her 102 trail only the 141 of Ciera Clark. Garcia gave up seven hits and three walks while striking out two.

Game 2 was even, 5-5, after four innings. The Golden Falcons broke it open by scoring seven times in the fifth. With the bases loaded and one out, redshirt sophomore Jaimie Parisi (South Hackensack, N.J./Hackensack) delivered a go-ahead three-run double. Felician later took advantage of three Clipper errors before freshman Krystina Lorch (Hemet, Calif./West Valley) ended the uprising with an RBI triple.

Garcia (8-8) had entered with the game tied in the fifth, runners on second and third, and one out, and escaped trouble for the Golden Falcons. She surrendered two runs in the sixth, but Spiegelberg provided an exclamation point with a homer to straightaway center in the bottom of the sixth.

Lorch was 3 for 3, and Apacible, Davis and Parisi (four RBI) added two hits each to Felician's 13-hit attack. Ryder enjoyed her second consecutive three-hit game and Yeisy Cruz (Bronx, N.Y./Belmont Prep) homered for Concordia.

Felician plays its third consecutive home date on Saturday, when it entertains the Jefferson Rams at noon for a doubleheader in Lyndhurst.
