Felician Women's Lacrosse Wins!!

Box Score

LYNDHURST, N.J. – The Felician University women's lacrosse team secured the program's first victory by defeating Centenary (N.J.) University, 15-5, in non-conference action on Tuesday afternoon at the Lyndhurst Recreation Complex.

Twelve of Felician's 15 goals were scored by freshmen. Rookie attacker Raquel Vilas (East Brunswick, N.J./East Brunswick) collected a Golden Falcon single-game record of nine points by totaling six goals and three assists. Classmate Janea Kelty (West Milford, N.J./St. Mary-Rutherford) had four goals and two assists.

Senior goalkeeper Megan Euler (Toms River, N.J./Manchester Township) backed a strong defensive effort with 12 saves and seven ground balls.

Felician (1-1) is in its fifth year as a varsity intercollegiate program, and Tuesday's win ended a streak of 49 consecutive losses. Euler is the Golden Falcons' only scholarship senior.

"I've been waiting for this moment since my freshman year," Euler said. "At the point when we were up 10 goals and the clock was running, knowing the win was coming, the feeling was just indescribable."

Goals by sophomore Cara Johnson (Manchester, N.J./Manchester Township), Kelty and Vilas gave the hosts a 3-0 lead just over 7 ½ minutes into the action. Felician led by that same margin, 5-2, with eight minutes, four seconds, left in the first period. Kelty converted a free-position shot at the 0:33 mark to hand the Golden Falcons a 7-3 edge at the break.

The second-half game clock wound under 20 minutes with the Golden Falcons clinging to an 8-4 edge. Felician then put the game away by tallying five times in a span of 9:20.

Felician led, 36-22 in shots and 39-26 in ground balls, setting team single-game school records in each category. Golden Falcon redshirt freshmen defender Amanda Ramirez (Manchester, N.J./Manchester Township) had a goal, five ground balls and six caused turnovers.

The victory was also the first in the women's lacrosse coaching career of first-year Felician head coach Brendan Bonacum. Now in his third as the Golden Falcons' men's coach, Bonacum owns the first victory in the history of both Felician lacrosse programs.

"We're going to enjoy this feeling," Euler said. "It's hard for others to see what this one win means for us. But it doesn't matter. Most of our upperclass players have waited a long time for this."

Senior attacker Kaylee Bennett (Lincroft, N.J./Freehold Township) had three goals, an assist, and four caused turnovers for Centenary (0-3). Cyclone sophomore midfielder Madison Barofski (Washington Township, N.J./Belvidere) amassed an assist, four ground balls, five draw controls and three caused turnovers, and freshman goalkeeper Jenyfer Pereira (Bloxom, Va.) made 10 saves.

Felician is idle until Mar. 18 when it travels to the University of the District of Columbia for a 1 p.m. non-league draw.
