Box Score 2 BENSALEM, Pa. – Graduate first baseman Nicole Spiegelberg (Blauvelt, N.Y.) became the Felician University softball program's all-time leader in runs batted in during the Golden Falcons' 15-8 victory over host Holy Family University in Game 2 of the teams' Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Bensalem High School. Felician junior Martarina Crumb (Branchville, N.J.) pitched a seven-hit shutout in her team's 4-0 win in Game 1.
Felician junior center fielder Sam Melendez (Levittown, N.Y.) was 4 for 7 with three extra-base hits and four RBI on the day.
In the nightcap, Spiegelberg went 2 for 3, plus two walks, with three runs scored. She had a two-run single in the fifth inning, then broke Ciera Clark's Felician record of 141 RBI with a grand slam home run in the sixth. Her six RBI were one shy of the school single-game mark held by Kelsi Ludwigsen.
With her team trailing, 3-2, Melendez hit a go-ahead three-run homer in the fourth. Spiegelberg's single plus an outfield error gave the visitors an 8-2 lead after 5 ½ innings but Holy Family answered with their own three-spot in the bottom of the fifth. The Tigers left the bases loaded, however, and the Golden Falcons broke the game open in the sixth. Run-scoring singles by Krystina Lorch (Hemet, Calif.) and C.J. Apacible (Long Beach, Calif.) preceded Spiegelberg's blast.
Redshirt freshman right-hander Abby Poirot (Winsted, Conn.) was the beneficiary of Felician's offensive outburst. In four innings, Poirot (3-5) struck out a career-high eight batters. She gave up five runs on five hits and six walks. Daisha Howard (Westbury, N.Y.) doubled and homered among three hits for the Golden Falcons, and Vienna Chierchia (Malanapan, N.J.) was 3 for 5.
Holy Family's Abigail Smith (Elkton, Md.) was 2 for 2 with a home run and three walks, and teammates Ashley Remington (Collegeville, Pa.) and Makenna Patterson (Sellersville, Pa.) had three hits each. The Tigers left 15 runners on base.
Crumb danced into and out of trouble throughout Game 1, stranding nine HFU baserunners, including seven in the final three frames. Felician scored in the second on an Apacible sacrifice fly, and the 1-0 score held through five.
The Golden Falcons picked up another run off Tiger hurler Remington (2-7) in the sixth when Spiegelberg drew a one-out walk and pinch-runner Jaylene Sierra (Jersey City, N.J.) scored on a Melendez double. HFU loaded the bases with one out in the home half, but Crumb escaped with a strikeout and a groundout. Felician picked up key insurance runs in the seventh on an Alexis Velotta (Menifee, Calif.) homer and an RBI groundout by Sarah Harrell (Chesapeake, Va.).
Crumb (3-6) struck out four and walked none in her second career shutout. Remington yielded seven hits and three walks with seven strikeouts in the hard-luck loss. Melendez was 2 for 4 and Spiegelberg doubled and walked twice for Felician. Holy Family's Remington and Heather Bogardus (Ridley, Pa.) were each 2 for 3.
Felician travels to Post University for a CACC doubleheader on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. in Waterbury, Conn.
