Softball Sweeps GBC; Spiegelberg Becomes All-Time Hits Leader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

WILMINGTON, Del. – Redshirt freshman Alexis De La Cruz (San Jacinto, Calif.) pitched a combined 8 2/3 innings of shutout relief and graduate student Nicole Spiegelberg (Blauvelt, N.Y.) became the Felician University softball program's all-time hits leader as the Golden Falcons claimed both ends of their Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader from host Goldey-Beacom College, 7-4 and 12-4, on Monday afternoon at the Jackson Athletics Complex.

De La Cruz (4-2) earned the victory in both contests. She yielded a combined eight hits with two strikeouts and two walks. Spiegelberg collected two hits in each game. A fifth-inning triple in the nightcap ran her career total to 188, one more than Jeannette Roldan amassed for the Golden Falcons from 2015-18.

Game 1 saw Felician (10-16, 9-7 CACC) recover from an early 4-0 deficit. After her team came up with three third inning runs, Golden Falcon freshman Sarah Harrell (Chesapeake, Va.) tied the game with an RBI double in the fourth. As De La Cruz kept the Lightning off the scoreboard, the visitors took the lead in the sixth on a run-scoring single from Mia Martinez (Bronx, N.Y.).

De La Cruz worked around a two-out walk in the sixth, and Felician tacked on a pair of runs in the seventh, using RBI singles from Krystina Lorch (Hemet, Calif.) and C.J. Apacible (Long Beach, Calif.). De La Cruz tossed the final five innings, allowing four hits and one walk. Golden Falcon leadoff hitter Martinez was 3 for 4 plus a walk and scored twice, and Daisha Howard (Westbury, N.Y.) (double, triple) joined Spiegelberg and Harrell with two hits each. Losing pitcher Jess Lusk (Victoria, British Columbia) was 3 for 3 with a double and two RBI for GBC.

Felician carried the momentum into Game 2, plating five first-inning runs. Howard lined a two-run double in the frame, and Apacible capped the rally with an RBI double. Goldey-Beacom pulled to within 5-4 in the fourth inning, but De La Cruz entered to escape a bases-loaded, one-out jam with her team still ahead.

A triple by Howard jump-started a six-run sixth to allow the Golden Falcons to take control. Felician stroked five hits in the inning, and took advantage of an error, two walks, a hit batsman, and two wild pitches.

The Lightning had 11 hits but left 12 runners on base. Howard had a double and triple among Felician's 12 hits. Shortstop Braydee Whitman was 2 for 4 for the Lightning (4-11, 4-11).

Apacible moved into 10th place on Felician's all-time hits list with 137.

Felician is in action for the fourth consecutive day on Tuesday, hosting Caldwell University at noon in Lyndhurst, N.J.
