Felician Softball Powers Past Griffins, 10-1 And 8-6

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

PHILADELPHIA – Felician University combined for 17 base hits while capturing both ends of its Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference softball doubleheader from host Chestnut Hill College on Monday afternoon at the CHC Softball Field. The Golden Falcons earned a 10-1, six-inning victory in Game 1 before capturing the nightcap, 8-6.

Felician (5-11, 5-5 CACC) hit two home runs during each contest. The Golden Falcons now have 15 homers on the season to lead the 14-team CACC.

Freshman third baseman Daisha Howard (Westbury, N.Y.) blasted a pair of longballs in Game 1. She hit a solo shot in the second before capping the game's scoring with a two-run round-tripper in the sixth. Leading, 5-1, after four innings, Felician plated two runs in the fifth and three in the sixth to end the contest a frame early.

Redshirt freshman right-hander Alexis De La Cruz (San Jacinto, Calif.) (1-2) pitched 2 2/3 innings of shutout, two-hit relief to earn her first collegiate victory. Felician outhit the Griffins, 10-5, and Chestnut Hill (0-10, 0-8) left 10 runners on base.

Freshman catcher Sarah Harrell (Chesapeake, Va.) was 2 for 2 plus a walk and a sacrifice. She drove in a pair of Felician runs. Junior designated player Krystina Lorch (Hemet, Ca.) also had two hits for the visitors. Senior Devon Horner (Mount Laurel, N.J.) drove in the Griffin run with a third-inning double.

Graduate first baseman Nicole Spiegelberg (Blauvelt, N.Y.) was 3 for 4 with a double, home run and two RBI to power Felician's Game 2 triumph. Spiegelberg drove in the Golden Falcons' first two runs with a first-inning home and a single in the third. Felician added two unearned runs in the fourth for a 4-0 edge, but a Nadine Arredondo (Stephenville, Texas) homer in the bottom of the fourth cut the Griffins' deficit in half.

Felician broke the game open in the sixth on a Lorch RBI single and a two-out, two-run home run from Mia Martinez (Bronx, N.Y.).  The Griffins received a three-run shot from sophomore Emma Peterson (Reading, Pa.) in the seventh but were unable to put the potential tying run at bat.

Golden Falcon redshirt freshman Abby Poirot (Winsted, Conn.) (2-4) went the distance in the pitching circle. She yielded five earned runs on 10 hits, struck out four batters and walked none. Gabrielle O'Byrne (Moorestown, N.J.) was 2 for 4 and scored twice for Chestnut Hill.

Felician plays a non-conference doubleheader against East Stroudsburg University on Wednesday at 2 p.m. in Stroudsburg, Pa.
