Box Score RUTHERFORD, N.J. – The Felician University women's lacrosse team was defeated by visiting D'Youville College, 18-2, in non-conference action on Saturday morning at Tryon Field. Felician (1-1) was participating in its 2022 home opener.
Freshman Paige Merz (Ogdensburg, N.Y./Ogdensburg Free Academy) and sophomore Amanda Panaccione (Old Bridge, N.J./Old Bridge) caged the Felician goals. Graduate students Paige Cocina (West Seneca, N.Y./West Seneca West) (one assist) and Marissa Malvaso (Syracuse, N.Y./Jordan-Elbridge) led D'Youville (1-1) with four scores each.
Malvaso tallied just 36 seconds into the action, and the Saints led, 4-1, after one period. D'Youville began to pull way in the middle stages of the second quarter. Panaccione's marker pulled the hosts to within 8-2 at the 5:39 mark, but a goal by Saint freshman Jillian Bernas (Cheektowaga, N.Y./St. Mary's) with 21 seconds to go before halftime sent her team into the break up by 7.
With 11:05 remaining in the third, D'Youville went ahead by a 12-2 margin, invoking running time. The Saint defense kept the Golden Falcons off the scorebard for the balance of the action. DYC goalkeeper Brinn Stworzydlak (Hamburg, N.Y./Frontier) earned the victory with seven saves.
Defensively for Felician, senior Emileigh Esposito (Beachwood, N.J./Toms River South) led all players with five ground ball and sophomore Tala Marzooq (Ewing, N.J./Ewing) had a game-high five draw controls. Sophomore goalie Lauren Bain (Hamilton, Ontario/Bishop Ryan) stopped 15 shots.
Felician hosts the University of Bridgeport on Wednesday at 1 p.m. in Rutherford.
