Martinez Walkoff Completes Softball Sweep Of Home Openers

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

WOOD-RIDGE, N.J. – Sophomore Mia Martinez (Bronx, N.Y./Ursuline School) lined a walk-off three-run double to lift Felician University to a 5-4 Game 2 victory and a sweep of its Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference softball doubleheader over visiting Goldey-Beacom College on Monday afternoon at the Wood-Ridge Athletics Complex. Felician had captured the first game, 13-5 in five innings.

Senior center fielder Jaylene Sierra (Jersey City, N.J./Ferris) was 5 for 7 with three stolen bases and four runs scored on the day for Felician (4-5, 2-0 CACC). The games began 2022 CACC play for both schools. The twinbill also marked this season's home openers for the Golden Falcons and their first contests at their new home, the WRAC.

In the nightcap, Goldey-Beacom (8-9, 0-2) rallied for a pair of runs after two were out in the top of the first inning. The Lighining tacked on four runs in the fourth, with Felician breaking through in the home half of the fourth on Victorie Leon's (Sylmar, Calif./Discovery Prep Charter) RBI single.

The hosts inched closer with an unearned run in the fifth. In the seventh, Felician relief pitcher Trinity Garcia (West Covina, Calif./West Covina) (1-0) escaped a bases-loaded jam to preserve the two-run deficit. The Golden Falcons then loaded the bases with a walk and a pair of infield hits before Martinez sent the first pitch she saw into the left-center field gap. Sierra scampered around from first base and scored the winning run without a play.

Sierra was 3 for 4 and Alexis Velotta (Menifee, Calif./Paloma Valley) and Vienna Chierchia (Manalapan, N.J./Manalapan) had two hits each for Felician. Freshman Alex Lowry (Wenonah, N.J./Gloucester Tech) picked up two doubles for the Lightning.

A seven-run third inning keyed Felician's victory in Game 1. Goldey-Beacom had scored four runs in the top of the third, capped by a solo home run from Chrissy Jordan (Pasadena, Md./CCBC Catonsville), to take a 4-3 lead. But the Golden Falcons produced five hits, and used a walk, an error and a hit batsman, for their eruption in the bottom half. Velotta's three-run double allowed the hosts to take full control, 10-4.

After each team scored a run in the fourth, Felician brought home a pair in the fifth to end the game. Sophomore right-hander Alexis De La Cruz (San Jacinto, Calif./San Jacinto) (2-3) gave up two earned runs in eight hits in a complete-game effort. Velotta, Sierra, and Chierchia collected two hits apiece. Losing pitcher Gwen Safin (Stroudsburg, Pa./Blair Academy) was 2 for 3 for GBC.

Felician will host Post University in a conference doubleheader on Thursday at noon in Wood-Ridge.
