Box Score 2 WOOD-RIDGE, N.J. – Senior Jaylene Sierra (Jersey City, N.J./Ferris) tripled with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning and scored the winning run on a bunt single by sophomore Johanna Rivera (Cliffside Park, N.J./Mount Saint Dominic Academy) as Felician University defeated visiting Post University, 6-5, in Game 1 of a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Softball doubleheader on Friday morning at the Wood-Ridge Athletics Complex. Post came back to claim Game 2, 10-2, in five innings.
Freshman designated player Victorie Leon (Sylmar, Calif./Discovery Prep Charter) was 4 for 5 during the twinbill for Felician (5-6, 3-1 CACC). Rivera finished 3 for 3 on the day.
Felician fell behind, 5-0, during Game 1. Post senior Kasey Jusino (Bordentown, N.J./Florence Township Memorial) lined a run-scoring double in the first inning, and freshman Bailey Dickenson (Vineland, N.J./Vineland) hit a grand slam home run in the third. A two-run homer by Golden Falcon sophomore Alexis Velotta (Menifee, Calif./Paloma Valley) sliced into the deficit, and the hosts tied the game in the fifth on a three-run double by Daisha Howard (Westbury, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial).
Post (6-6, 1-1) put its leadoff batter on base in both the sixth and seventh innings, but came away empty each time. The contest appeared ticketed for extra innings when Sierra lofted a fly ball to the right-center field gap. But a miscommunication between the outfielders allowed the ball to fall untouched, and Sierra raced around to third base. Rivera, who had entered two innings earlier as a defensive replacement, then bunted a 1-and-0 pitch in front of home plate. Eagle pitcher Maddison Caldwell (Townsend, Del./Middletown) charged and opted to make a play on Sierra at home, but the throw was late and Felician claimed the 6-5 victory.
Leon went 3 for 3 and junior Lauren Del Campo (Claremont, Calif./Claremont) was 2 for 3 with a double and scored twice for Felician. All five runs charged to junior pitcher Alexis De La Cruz (San Jacinto, Calif./San Jacinto) were unearned. De La Cruz (3-3) gave up six hits and one walk in a complete-game effort, striking out five Eagle batters. Caldwell (1-2) took the loss in relief.
The Eagles produced 13 hits during the nightcap, including eight for extra bases. Post senior first baseman Allyson Wallauer (Landenberg, Pa./Avongrove) hit a pair of two-run home runs and finished 3 for 3 with five RBI.
Post jumped out to a 7-0 lead after two innings. Felician inched closer on Sierra's two-run single in the third, but Wallauer's second blast highlighted a three-run fourth for the visitors. Post senior left-hander Brianna Koref (Springfield, N.J./Jonathan Dayton) retired the Golden Falcons in order in the fourth. When Felician failed to advance Rivera after her one-out single in the fifth, the game ended on the NCAA eight-run rule.
Koref (4-2) went the distance on a four-hitter. Samantha Ricardulli (Yorktown, N.Y./Yorktown) and Bailee Zaccaro (Levittown, Pa./Pennsbury) joined Wallauer as Eagles with three hits. Rivera was 2 for 2 and scored a run for the Golden Falcons.
Felician's CACC doubleheader at Georgian Court University scheduled for Saturday has been postponed a day due to anticipated inclement weather. The Golden Falcons and Lions will meet on Sunday in Lakewood, N.J., with Game 1 starting at 11 a.m.
