LAKEWOOD, N.J. – Felician University lost both games of its Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference softball doubleheader to host Georgian Court University on Sunday at the GCU Softball Complex. GCU earned victories of 10-2 and 13-5, both decided in five innings. There were 10 home runs hit during the doubleheader, including seven by the hosts.

Georgian Court (15-9, 4-0 CACC) was the 2021 CACC champion and was chosen to the top spot in the league's 2022 Preseason Coaches' Poll.

Felician (5-8, 3-3) was limited to two base hits during Game 1 by GCU senior right-hander Mikayla Gilgert (Apache Junction, Ariz.). One of them, a solo home run by Alexis Velotta (Menifee, Calif.), cut what was once a 3-0 Lion lead to 3-2 after the top of the third inning.

GCU, however, plated a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the third. The Lions added three runs in the fourth, including consecutive home runs by Adriana Mungo (Temecula, Calif.) and Alyssa Herrera (La Palma, Calif.). After Gilgert set down the Golden Falcons in order in the fifth, the Lions scratched across two more runs to end the game on the NCAA eight-run rule.

Game 2 began similarly. The Lions scored five runs in the second inning to take an early lead, only to see Felician rebound for a three-spot on back-to-back homers by Vienna Chierchia (Manalapan, N.J.) and Victorie Leon (Sylmar, Calif.) in the top of the third. The GCU offense kept attacking, however, with four scores in each of the third and fourth innings. Gilgert (11-4), who had entered in relief in the fourth, once again retired Felician in order in the fifth to earn her second win of the day.

Chierchia was 2 for 3 with four RBI and Daisha Howard (Westbury, N.Y.) had two hits and scored twice for Felician. Mungo was 2 for 3 with a home and four RBI to pace the Lions' 12-hit offense.

Felician travels to Wilmington (Del.) University for a 2 p.m. CACC doubleheader on Thursday.
