Women's Lacrosse Sets Records Despite 20-16 Loss At Caldwell

Box Score

WEST CALDWELL, N.J. – Sophomore midfielder Tala Marzooq (Ewing, N.J.) set all three Felician University women's lacrosse draw control records during the Golden Falcons' 20-16 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference loss to host Caldwell University on Wednesday afternoon at Essex Valley School.

Despite the setback, Felician (2-7, 1-2 CACC) scored the most goals in a game in the seven-year history of its team. Sophomore Janea Kelty (West Milford, N.J.) scored two goals, handed out a program-record five assists, and picked up nine draw controls.

Marzooq recorded a career-high six points with four goals and two assists. She also had 13 of the Golden Falcons' record 26 draw controls. In the process, she ran her season total to 44 draws and her career tally to 53. The previous marks for draw controls in a game, season and career were held by Andrea Hill (11), Jordyn Juvelier (40), and Liana Chirichiello (43), respectively.

Kelty became Felician's single-season leader in assists (12) and points (24). Chirichiello had seven assists in 2017, while Juvelier possessed the points mark of 21 in 2019.

Felician fell behind 7-1 before Marzooq scored with 18 seconds left in the first period to salvage a five-goal deficit at quarter's end. The Golden Falcons eventually erased the entire deficit. They caged four goals in the final 3:07, including a buzzer-beater by Emileigh Esposito (Beachwood, N.J./Toms River South), to trail, 10-9, at the intermission. Melissa Amezquita (Paterson, N.J.) then evened the score with a marker the 12:53 mark of the third period.

Caldwell (1-6, 1-2) took control by notching the contest's next four goals, including a pair of free-position shots. For the second consecutive period, Felician scored as the buzzer sounded, this time from the stick of Amezquita. But the visitors still trailed, 16-12.

Two more Cougar scores allowed the hosts to match their largest lead, 18-12, with 10:59 remaining. Felician collected four of the game's final six goals, including the first in the career of Nicole Jenal (Bethpage, N.Y.), but ran out of time.

Felician took a school-record 41 shots, including an individual Felician standard of 15 by Kelty, while holding the Cougars to 34. Caldwell senior goalkeeper Mia Monacelli (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) earned the victory with 16 saves. Freshman Madison Ellis (Wayne, N.J.) paced the Cougar offense with seven goals and three assists.

Amezquita finished with a season-best four goals. Sophomore Raquel Vilas (East Brunswick, N.J.) produced three goals for Felician and Esposito added two.

Felician returns to CACC action on Saturday with a 10 a.m. draw against Wilmington University in Newark, Del.
