Softball Recovers To Gain Split At Nyack

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – Felician University earned an 11-3 five-inning Game 2 victory over host Nyack College to gain a split of the teams' Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference softball doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon at the College of Staten Island Softball Complex. Nyack spoiled two Golden Falcon comeback efforts to take Game 1, 10-8.

Sophomores Daisha Howard (Westbury, N.Y.) and Mia Martinez (Bronx, N.Y.) each collected two hits in each game for Felician (11-14, 7-7 CACC).

The Golden Falcons used a consistent offense and a six-hitter from senior pitcher Martarina Crumb (Branchville, N.J.) to capture the nightcap. Felician picked up 11 hits in the game, with 10 being singles. The visitors also drew four walks and were hit by two pitches, and took advantage of four Nyack errors to plate five unearned runs.

After opening the scoring with three unearned runs in the top of the second inning, the Golden Falcons broke the game open with five more in the third. Victorie Leon (Sylmar, Calif.) had an RBI single and Lauren Del Campo (Claremont, Calif.) a two-run single to highlight the rally.

Crumb (4-6) allowed three runs on six hits over five innings. After her offense extended to an 11-1 lead in the fifth, she allowed three consecutive two out hits during the bottom half, including a two-run double to Izzy Murillo (Irving, Texas). But the left-hander followed with her only strikeout of the day to end the contest.

Johanna Rivera (Cliffside Park, N.J.) drove in three runs without a hit for Felician. Del Campo and Alexis Velotta (Menifee, Calif.) joined Howard and Martinez with a pair of hits apiece. Senior catcher Janelle Adams (Oxnard, Calif.) was 2 for 2 for the Warriors (5-20, 1-11).

Felician erased deficits of 6-0 and 8-6 during the opener before Nyack received a tiebreaking two-run home run from senior Erin O'Brien (Bridgetown, N.J.) in the bottom of the sixth inning. Felician put the tying run on base in the seventh, but Warrior left-hander Kelly Rattigan (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) (3-10) worked out of trouble.

The Golden Falcons had evened the score for the second time in the top of the sixth. Rivera drove in a run with a triple before executing a straight steal of home plate.

O'Brien finished 3 for 3 with a double, home run, and five RBI. Jayna Celano (Goshen, N.Y.) (three RBI) and Jessa Johnson (Beaumont, Texas) also had three hits as part of Nyack's 14-hit attack. Felician senior Jaylene Sierra (Jersey City, N.J.) was 2 for 4 with a triple and four RBI and Howard also tripled during the contest.

Felician begins a six-game homestand wrapping around Easter Sunday with a CACC twinbill against the University of the Sciences on Thursday at noon in Wood-Ridge, N.J.
