Victorie! Leon Hit Hands Softball Split With Devils

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

WOOD-RIDGE, N.J. – Freshman Victorie Leon (Sylmar, Calif./Discovery Prep Charter) grounded a seventh-inning pinch-hit RBI single through the left side of the infield to end Felician University's 6-5 softball victory over visiting University of the Sciences in Game 2 of the teams' Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader on Thursday afternoon at the Wood-Ridge Athletics Complex. USciences had earned a come-from-behind 13-8 win in Game 1.

Sophomore third baseman Daisha Howard (Westbury, N.J./Kellenberg Memorial) went 5 for 9 for Felician. Golden Falcon senior Krystina Lorch (Hemet, Calif./West Valley) and junior Jaylene Sierra (Jersey City, N.J./Ferris) each collected two hits in each game. Leadoff batter Abbigail Markee (Millville, N.J./Millville) went 7 for 9 and scored six runs for the Devils (11-23, 9-7 CACC).

Felician fell behind, 4-0, after 2 ½ innings of the nightcap. In the bottom of the third, the Golden Falcons loaded the bases with one out on two singles and a hit batter. Each runner advanced one bag on Mia Martinez's (Bronx, N.Y./Ursuline Academy) single, and Lauren Del Campo (Claremont, Calif./Claremont) brought home another run with a groundout to cut the deficit in half.

USciences tacked on a run in the fourth when Markee tripled with one out and scored on an Ashley Steiner (Wilmington, Del./Charter School of Wilmington) sacrifice fly. But Felician knotted the score with a three-run bottom of the fourth. Johanna Rivera's (Cliffside Park, N.J./Mount St. Dominic Academy) RBI triple began the uprising. After Alexis Velotta (Menifee, Calif./Paloma Valley) was hit by a pitch and stole second base, Sierra tied the game with a two-run double.

Devil freshman Kyla Valver (Glenolden, Pa./Interboro) entered the game as a relief pitcher and worked out of further trouble. But Felician senior left-hander Martarina Crumb (Branchville, N.J./Sussex Tech) righted herself and kept the game even. Crumb (5-6) retired USciences in order in the fifth and sixth frames, and worked around a leadoff Markee single in the seventh.

Del Campo reached Valver (0-1) for a double to start the bottom of the seventh and moved to third on Lorch's infield hit. Leon sent an 0-and-1 pitch between the shortstop and third-baseman to hand the Golden Falcons the victory. Crumb allowed three earned runs on eight hits with two strikeouts and one walk in a complete-game effort. Ten Golden falcons – all nine starters plus Leon – had at least one hit, with Lorch and Sierra claiming two each. Markee was 4 for 4 and scored three runs.

In the opener, Felician scored three fifth-inning runs to extend a one-run lead to 7-3. But the Devils turned the tables with an eight-run sixth. USciences came up with five hits in the inning, including a go-ahead two-run single by Gabriella Polera (Freehold, N.J./St. John Vianney) followed by a two-run double from Gabrielle Simms (Phoenixville, Pa./Pope John Paul).

Felician outhit USciences, 16-10. Nine of the Devils' runs were unearned. USciences freshman Olivia Quercia (Monroe, N.J./Monroe Township) (1-6) earned the win in relief, giving up only an unearned run on four hits in 2 1/3 innings. Howard went 4 for 5 and Lorch drove in three runs to pace the Felician offense. Markee was 3 for 5 with a triple, scored three runs, and drove in three.

Felician steps out of CACC play to host Southern Connecticut State University in a doubleheader on Saturday at 4:30 p.m.
