Box Score 2 WOOD-RIDGE, N.J. – Felician University came back from down 7-0 to earn an 11-10 victory over the College of Staten Island in the first game of the teams' non-conference softball doubleheader on Monday afternoon at the Wood-Ridge Athletics Complex. Staten Island recovered to claim a 9-2 Game 2 triumph. The programs were believed to be meeting for the first time.
CSI leadoff hitter Jaclyn Kateridge (Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Connetquot) was 8 for 10 on the day and scored a combined six runs.
The day's opening game ended when Felician sophomore shortstop Mia Martinez (Bronx, N.Y./Ursuline School) was hit by a pitch by Kateridge (0-1), the fourth Dolphin hurler of the contest, with the bases-loaded and none out in the bottom of the seventh inning. It was the Golden Falcons' fifth "walkoff" victory of the season.
To get to that point, however, the hosts needed to erase a 7-0 deficit for the second time this season. Jaylene Sierra's (Jersey City, N.J./Ferris) two-run single highlighted a four-run fourth for the Golden Falcons. Dolphin junior Samantha MacPherson (Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Sachem North) drilled her second home run of the game, a two-run shot in the fifth, but Martinez answered with a two-run blast and Sierra had an RBI single in the home half of the fifth to pull Felician to within 9-7.
The Golden Falcons completed the comeback in the sixth. Vienna Chierchia (Manalapan, N.J./Manalapan) led off with a double and Victorie Leon (Sylmar, Calif./Discovery Charter Prep) followed with a game-tying home run to straightaway center field. One out later, Lauren Del Campo (Claremont, N.J./Claremont) set the table again with a two-bagger and was singled home by Madeline Layman (Meridian, Idaho/Mountain View).
Kateridge entered in relief from her designated player spot and held the score at 10-9. Then, after Felician reliever Trinity Garcia (West Covina, Calif./West Covina) retired the first two Dolphins in the seventh, Kateridge extended the game with a solo homer to left field. But Felician loaded the bases when two errors sandwiched a Chierchia single, and Martinez ran the count full before being grazed by a Kateridge offering.
Garcia (3-2) gave up eight runs – five earned – on 10 hits in 6 2/3 innings of relief work. She struck out three batters, including the 100th of her career. Sierra went 3 for 5 with three RBI. Kateridge and Anissa Acosta (Los Angeles, Calif./Campbell Hall) (three doubles) were each 4 for 5 for CSI (10-20).
After playing first base during Game 1, Acosta entered the pitching circle for the nightcap and spun a three-hitter. She worked around five walks as Felician left seven runners on base.
After Daisha Howard (Westbury, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) staked the Golden Falcons to an early lead with a first-inning RBI double, CSI took control with four runs in the second inning and three more in the fourth.
Kateridge again was 4 for 5, this time with two doubles. Dolphin sophomore Elizabeth Moore (Los Angeles, Calif./Fairfax) was 2 for 4 and drove in two runs. Felician's Alexis Velotta (Menifee, Calif./Paloma Valley) had a pair of hits. The Golden Falcons also came back from a 7-0 hole to defeat Holy Family University, 8-7, on Apr. 2.
Felician (13-16) plays a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader at Thomas Jefferson University on Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. in Philadelphia.
