Softball Shut Down Twice By Rams

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

PHILADELPHIA – Felician University was kept off the scoreboard in dropping both ends of its Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference softball doubleheader to host Thomas Jefferson University, 8-0 and 3-0, on Wednesday afternoon on Jefferson's East Falls Campus.

Senior center fielder Jaylene Sierra (Jersey City, N.J.) was 4 for 4 on the day for Felician, collecting half of the Golden Falcons' hits.

The results allowed Jefferson (9-19, 8-10 CACC) to catch Felician (13-18, 8-10) for eighth place and the final playoff position in the CACC. Both teams have six league games remaining. The Rams now own the tiebreaker advantage over the Golden Falcons by virtue of their 2-0 head-to-head record.

Sophomore right-hander Gianna DeLorenzo (Milltown, N.J.) was the only pitcher used by the Rams on Wednesday. DeLorenzo spun a five-inning three-hit shutout in Game 1, striking out four Golden Falcons while walking none. Felician did not have a runner reach third base.

Jefferson used three Felician errors to plate four unearned runs in the bottom of the first inning. The Rams added a run in the third before Ellie Egher's (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) two-run double in the fifth put her team on the verge of victory. The Golden Falcons were one out away from moving the game to the sixth inning, but a dropped third strike extended the frame and allowed Ali Murphy's (Havertown, Pa.) RBI single to end the contest on the NCAA eight-run rule.

Jefferson designated player Julie Heine (Schwenksville, Pa.) was 3 for 3 with two doubles and scored three runs. Murphy finished 2 for 3. Sierra was 2 for 2 for Felician and Krystina Lorch (Hemet, Calif.) had the other Golden Falcon safety.

The Rams returned DeLorenzo (7-10) to the pitching circle for Game 2 and she came through once again, tossing a seven-inning five hit shutout with six strikeouts. DeLorenzo did not walk a Golden Falcon batter in 12 innings of work for the afternoon.

Felician stranded four baserunners over the first three innings. Jefferson jumped on top in the first on an RBI double by Sam Gomez (West Chester, Pa.). The Rams received run-scoring singles from Murphy and Winnai Hoyt (Stroudsburg, Pa.) in the fourth, but Golden Falcon senior left-hander Martarina Crumb (Branchville, N.J.) wiggled of further trouble and kept the Rams off the scoreboard for the balance of the contest.

Crumb (5-8) yielded seven hits and three walks in a complete-game effort. Sierra was 2 for 2 plus a sacrifice.

Felician concludes its non-conference schedule for 2022 with a makeup doubleheader at Adelphi University, the top-ranked team in the Division II East Region, on Thursday at 2 p.m. in Garden City, N.Y.
