Late Game 2 Comeback Completes Sweep, 4-0 Weekend For Softball

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

WOOD-RIDGE, N.J. – Sparked by a three-run home run by junior Lauren Del Campo (Claremont, Calif./Claremont) and solid relief pitching from senior Trinity Garcia (West Covina, Calif./West Covina), the Felician University softball team earned a come-from-behind 6-5 Game 2 victory and a sweep of its non-conference doubleheader over visiting American International College on Sunday afternoon at the Wood-Ridge Athletics Complex. Felician had claimed Game 1, 8-3.

Sophomore shortstop Mia Martinez (Bronx, N.Y./Ursuline School) was on base six times for the Golden Falcons on the day. The victories allowed Felician (9-10) to complete a 4-0 weekend in Wood-Ridge after having won a pair of Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference contests from Holy Family University on Saturday.

American International (3-17) moved ahead, 4-0, after 3 ½ innings of the nightcap. But with one out in the home half of the fourth, Del Campo hit her first home run as a Golden Falcon to keep her team in the game. The Yellow Jackets tacked on a run in the sixth on a solo homer by Victoria Andrade (Salem, N.H./Salem). But Felician completed the comeback during the bottom of the sixth.

The hosts loaded the bases with no one out when two walks sandwiched a Martinez single. AIC made a pitching change, but Felician junior Alexis De La Cruz (San Jacinto, Calif./San Jacinto) drew another walk to pull her team within 5-4. The Yellow Jackets got a force at second on Johanna Rivera's (Cliffside Park, N.J./Mount St. Dominic Academy) grounder toward the middle, and when they again failed to turn a double play on Alexis Velotta's (Menifee, Calif./Paloma Valley) sharp grounder, the Golden Falcons took the lead.

Garcia (2-0) allowed a walk to start the seventh. But following a sacrifice, she recorded a strikeout and induced a groundout to end the game. In all, she gave up three hits and three walks in 3 2/3 innings out of the bullpen, with Andrade's blast the only blemish on her line. She struck out a season-high five batters. Martinez was 2 for 3 and scored twice and Rivera also had two hits for Felician. Leadoff batter Destiny McGrath (Norton, Mass./Norton) was 2 for 3 with a double for AIC.

De La Cruz (5-5) scattered eight hits and allowed two earned runs in a complete-game victory in Game 1. Krystina Lorch (Hemet, Calif./West Valley) broke a 1-1 tie with a two-run single in the bottom of the first inning, and the Golden Falcons never trailed again.

Clinging to a 5-3 lead, Felician put the game away on Martinez's two-out, three-run double in the sixth. The Golden Falcons drew 12 walks in the contest, which took two hours, one minute. Martinez was on base four times, and Vienna Chierchia (Malanapan, N.J./Manalapan) earned three walks and scored twice.

Felician faces Bloomfield College in a CACC twinbill on Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. in Little Ferry, N.J.
