Box Score 2 SPRINGFIELD, MA – Felician Softball hit the road for a non-conference doubleheader against American International College (AIC) in Springfield, MA Sunday afternoon. The squad ultimately swept the hosts in 6-1 and 11-3 victories.
GAME ONE:
Alexis Velotta (Menifee, CA) led off for the green-and-gold to slam a homerun in her first at bat, to swiftly put Felician on the board. Still in the first, the Golden Falcons secured three more runs to hold a 4-0 advantage over the Yellow Jackets.
Kathryn Steinmetz (Chula Vista, CA) would record a sac fly to bring home another green-and-gold run to extend its lead to 5-0. AIC eventually recorded a run in the bottom of the third to chip away at the Golden Falcon lead, but the hosts could not overcome the deficit.
By the top of the fifth, Mia Martinez (Bronx, NY) put herself in scoring position to be sent home on a Jaylyn Melendez (Commack, NY) sacrifice bunt to propel the squad to the 6-1 victory.
Velotta went 1-2 with three walks, two runs, one RBI and a homerun while Martinez went 3-4 with two RBI's and two runs. Alexis De La Cruz (San Jacinto, CA) clinched the win with 7.0 innings pitched to surrender two hits and one run.
GAME TWO:
In game two, the Yellow Jackets secured a 2-run first inning to put themselves ahead of the Golden Falcons. However, the host lead was short lived when Mikayla Brown (Las Vegas, NV) posted a RBI single to have Martinez ultimately steal home when Brown was caught at second to tie at two.
Felician recorded a five run third inning ignited by a Daisha Howard (Westbury, NY) triple to take the 7-2 lead. By the top of the seventh the Golden Falcons recorded its final run of the contest from a Hannah Ramirez (Carson, CA) RBI single to send the Golden Falcons back to Rutherford with a two-game sweep.
During game two, Martinez secured her 100th career hit as she went 2-4 with two runs. Vienna Chierchia (Manalapan, NJ) went 3-5 with three runs and one RBI while Ramirez went 3-5 with two runs and a RBI. Steinmetz also went 3-5 but recorded one run and a RBI. Brown finished 2-4 with three RBI's and one run and starting pitcher Riley Williams (Corona, CA) pitched 7.0 innings to allow seven hits and three runs.
After the sweep, the softball squad improves to 16-11 overall and will be heading back into conference play Monday afternoon to face Goldey-Beacom in a doubleheader at 2:00pm
