Box Score LYNDHURST, N.J. – The Felician College baseball team set a school record with its seventh consecutive victory on Wednesday afternoon, defeating visiting Concordia (N.Y.) College, 5-2, in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference action at the Lyndhurst Recreation Complex. The game marked the end of the CACC season for both schools, with Felician (25-20, 16-4) entering the day locked into first place in the conference.
Felician senior second-baseman Mickey Zudonyi (Holmdel, NJ/Holmdel) went 4 for 5, and in the process, became his school's all time hits leader with 215. He surpassed the 214 career base hits of former teammate Marcos Torres from 2007-10. Zudonyi, the Golden Falcons' leadoff man, lined out in the first inning, then singled in the second, fourth, and sixth to tie Torres before blasting a two-out double in the seventh.
"As a freshman, all I set out to do was contribute to my team every day," Zudonyi said. "Eventually that goal led me to this personal milestone. I am proud to be a part of this great team."
Yet another Felician record was tied when freshman pitcher Matthew Facendo (Hazlet, NJ/Raritan) closed out the victory. Facendo loaded the bases with one out before recording a strikeout and groundout for his seventh save of the season, matching the Golden Falcon mark set by Joe Brescia in 2008.
The teams sat through a 56-minute pre-game rain delay before Felician got out to a 2-0 lead with single runs in the second and third innings. An RBI single by Chris Ayala (Marlboro, NJ/Marlboro) was the third of four consecutive one-out hits by the hosts in the second, but Concordia pitcher Felix Lopez (Brooklyn, NY/Monroe College) (2-7) induced a double-play grounder to escape further damage. In the third, Jimmy Simpson (Biscayne Park, FL/Coral Gables) led off with a bunt single and later scored on a wild pitch.
Felician senior right-hander D.J. Stinsman (Egg Harbor Township, NJ/EHT) (5-4) worked six strong innings, allowing one run on four hits. He departed with a 3-1 lead after Simpson came through with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth. Chet Godfrey (Millville, NJ/Millville) yielded an unearned run in the seventh, and Stephen Paladino (Brooklyn, NY/St. Peter's) walked the first two batters he faced in the eighth before rebounding with a strikeout and double play.
The Golden Falcons gave Facendo an extra cushion by scoring twice in the bottom of the eighth when Joe Petosa (Spotswood, NJ/Spotswood) produced an RBI double and scored on Mike Farrell's (Lincroft, NJ/Middletown South) single. Facendo put the first two runners on base in the ninth before settling down.
Felician out-hit the Clippers, 17-7, and survived leaving 15 men on base. Simpson and Kevin Whitehead (Tonawanda, NY/Kenmore East) each went 3 for 5. Yonatan Rodriguez (Tarrytown, NY/Dutchess CC) picked up three hits for the Clippers (12-31, 9-11).
The loss eliminated Concordia from CACC playoff contention.
