No. 20 SNHU's Pitching Puts Damper On Baseball's Senior Day

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

LYNDHURST, N.J. – Four Felician College pitchers combined on a three-hitter, but the Golden Falcons were defeated, 1-0, by visiting Southern New Hampshire University in Game 2 of the teams' non-conference baseball doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at the Lyndhurst Recreation Complex. Southern New Hampshire also won the day's opening game, 11-0.

The Game 1 setback snapped Felician's school-record seven-game winning streak. The doubleheader completed the hosts' home schedule. The Golden Falcon offense was limited to a combined six hits on the afternoon and was struck out 23 times. SNHU (38-12) is ranked No. 20 in the most recent national NCAA Division II writers' poll.

Game 2 was a scheduled seven-inning affair, and with an eye toward their Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference playoff opener on Thursday, the Golden Falcons (25-22), spread out their pitching. Brian Dudzinski (Lincroft, NJ/Middletown South) started and struck out four in two hitless innings, and fellow senior right-hander D.J. Stinsman (Egg Harbor Township, NJ/EHT) followed with two more scoreless frames, yielding one hit.

Meanwhile, Felician could do little against Penman junior lefthander Tim Flight (Portsmouth, RI/Portsmouth) (7-1). Flight gave up two harmless singles to Jay Collazo (Wall Twp., NJ/Manasquan) in the first and third innings, and worked around two walks in the second, but kept the game scoreless until his team was able to break through in the fifth.

With Kenny Monteith (Denville, NJ/Morristown-Beard) on the hill for the Golden Falcons, SNHU produced a two-out rally. After retiring the first two hitters, Monteith (4-1) gave up a single and a hit batsman. Penman leadoff man Brendan O'Brien (East Bridgewater, MA/East Bridgewater) followed with a single through the left side, plating Bryan Toland (Wildwood, NJ/Wildwood Catholic) with the game's only run.

Flight did not allow a hit the rest of the way, completing a two-hit shutout with 10 strikeouts and five walks.

Felician also fell victim to a complete-game shutout in the opener, a nine-inning four-hitter by SNHU senior righty Brad Monroe (Hampton, NJ/Winnacunnet) (8-3). The Golden Falcons struck out 13 times and walked once, only on one occasion putting a runner on third base.

The Penmen scored single runs in each of the first three innings and again in the fifth, before taking full control with six in the seventh. Each SNHU starter had at least one hit in the visitors' 17-hit attack, with Toland and Greg Pezzuto (Hastings-on-Hudson, NY/Hastings) (3 runs) each going 3 for 4. Chet Godfrey (Millville, NJ/Millville) (5-5) started and allowed four runs (three earned) on eight hits in five innings for Felician.

Nine Felician seniors -- Anthony Abbato (North Arlington, NJ/Hudson Catholic), Dudzinski, George Hajjar (Utica, NY/Whitesboro), Miguel Hidalgo (Ridgefield, NJ/Ridgefield Memorial), Monteith, Casey Phillips (Englewood, FL/Lemon Bay), Jimmy Simpson (Biscayne Park, FL/Coral Gables), Stinsman, and Mickey Zudonyi (Holmdel, NJ/Holmdel) – were honored in Senior Day ceremonies between games.
