Simpson, Collazo Help Put Baseball Back On Winning Track

Box Score

BOCA RATON, Fla. -- Senior Jimmy Simpson (Biscayne Park, FL) went 3  for 4 and sophomore Jay Collazo (Wall, NJ) had two hits and two runs batted in as the Felician College baseball team earned a 5-2 non-conference victory over Molloy College on Saturday morning on the campus of Lynn University. Molloy is ranked No. 9 in the most recent NCAA Division II East Region writers' poll.

Five Felician pitchers combined to scatter nine hits, strike out nine batters, and work around six walks in the victory. Right-hander Brett Hauber (Deposit, NY) started and yielded a run on a wild pitch over three innings of work. Fellow senior Kenny Monteith (Denville, NJ) (2-0) earned the victory with two innings of scoreless relief work, and Brian Dudzinski (Lincroft, NJ) got the final six outs, striking out three, for his first save.

After moving ahead on Collazo's fielder's choice grounder in the second inning, Felician, the designated visiting team, took control with four runs in the top of the third. The Golden Falcons loaded the bases with no one out in the inning, and Kevin Whitehead (Tonawanda, NY) knocked in a run with a fielder's choice grounder. When the ball was thrown over the first baseman's head, Simpson also scored on the play from second base.

After two singles re-loaded the bases, two more runs came home on Collazo's grounder to second base that was misplayed for an error. Collazo was credited with one RBI on the play.

Molloy (5-6) was hampered by six errors on the day, and left 11 runners on base. Starting pitcher Patrick Brown (Howard Beach, NY) (1-2) took the loss, yielding three earned runs on five hits over three innings. Reliever Matthew Metz (West Hempstead, NY) kept the Lions in contention, pitching six innings of scoreless, three-hit relief.

Senior Carmine Pellechia (Staten Island, NY) and junior Greg Walsh (Bellmore, NY) each went 3 for 3 with two stolen bases for Molloy.

Felician (5-11) snapped an eight-game losing streak. The Golden Falcons conclude their nine-game spring break Florida trip with an 11 a.m. matchup with St. Thomas Aquinas College on Sunday in Lake Worth.
